The folly and agony of war
Family on family is never easy to do, but I have brought this handwritten manuscript to publication because I believe my grandfather's account is well-written, dignified, thought-provoking and moving. Also it is more than seventy years since my uncle was killed, so I think it is appropriate that the account be published now "lest we forget" - as Rudyard Kipling's time-honoured phrase goes. We get a clear idea of the personality of the boy born in Edinburgh who grew up mostly in Chile, enjoying field hockey at the Grange School in Santiago, horseriding and fishing trips with his father, before he was called back to Europe, first to boarding school in Scotland and then to the ultimate sacrifice in Germany, where he now rests in peace in a Commonwealth war graves cemetery. The author's Christian faith is sorely tested in this book, not originally intended as more than a cathartic exercise perhaps. He himself writes that he doesn't know why he is writing the book, but I am so glad he did.
