Lincoln's Assassins: Their Trial and Execution

Great addition to Swanson's books
If you have read Mr. Swanson's books "Manhunt" and "Bloody Crimes" you really should get this book. It compiles in photos, memorabilia, posters, etc., the atmosphere of the time just subsequent to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. Too often events that happened more than 125 years ago sem dim and hazy, and we must form mind pictures of the people and things involved in them. This book collects a multitude of items, particularly photos, concerning the alleged assassins of the President, and their trial and execution. There is commentary running throughout the book, and a lot of it seems drawn from Mr. Swanson's previous works, but it fits in seamlessly with the exhibits shown on every page. This is not your average book-sized package; rather it can be looked at as a "coffee table" book, although not one that most people would wish to display on their coffee tables, since the cover picture shows the hanging of 4 of the suspects! To any reader seriously interested in this dark period of our history, and particularly to one, such as myself, who read Mr. Swanson's book, this is a "must purchase". It gives "life" to the personalities involved in a troublesome and tumultuous time, and through the photos we can now see what these folks about whom we have read look like.

Absolutely the BEST book I've ever seen on this subject!
On April 13th I went on a John Wilkes Booth Escape Route tour inClinton, Maryland, and just by sheer luck, Mr. Swanson was in attendance and though it was the 3rd time I'd been on the tour, it was the best. He is a most enthralling person and though I didn't know who he was for almost an hour, he was obviously very knowlegeable on the subject of the assassination. He was kind enough to sign a copy of his book for me that I purchased in the Surratt Society bookstore and wrote a very lengthy and personal note in it-but I'm rambling- The book is simply fabulous-The text is extremely informative and the photos are the best I've ever seen-some are very rare and have never been published before-This book is a MUST for anyone interseted in either the Civil War or the Lincoln assassination- it's definitley top drawer and well worth ever cent-I can't recommend it highly enough!

Serious History for all time
This is a great book and for all Lincoln assassination scholars orthose who just want to read riveting history. This book is fully illustrated with truly interesting photos. These illustrationsreally bring it all together with the narrative. As I read it,I can't but help feelingthat history was a little unkind to some of the "conspirators". For example, poor George Atzerodt, was called "villainous" due to his scruffy appearance. This was a sign of the times during the 19th century to judge someone like thisbut,as the book explains there was a definite "hysteria" after the death of Lincoln. It is understandable as this was the first death of a president this way.I do highly recommend this book for anyone who likes this subject. It gives a newmeaning to "full understanding". A great work!

New insight into history
Never knew much about the trial. This book makes one feel like he is living in the time. I do not think all deserved to be hanged. When someone walks away without attempting to murder he should not be hanged. Also I did not see justification for hanging Mary Surratt. But taking weapons for pick up by Booth did deserve a long jail sentenceThe country wanted revenge and the quick trial didn't do much for a proper defense. Also the way the prisoners were treated with hoods etc was cruel and uncalled for.

Lincoln fan
I've always liked to read everything about Lincoln's life and death. AlsoI lived across the street from the Surratt House in Maryland and saw whereBooth got another gun during his escape from D.C. I'm not sure that MarySurratt should have been hung with the others. If so all other motel/hotel/B & B etc owners should be put in jail beside those who plotted within theowner's walls? Anyway it's a great collection of info!

Swanson does a good job in Text and Pictorial Presentation
The author does a very good job in depicting the events leading up to the trial and execution of the Lincoln's assassin's. There was more pictures and graphic presentation than I expected. More text and description of the documentation would have caused me to rate this book z as 5 star. This book is complements Swanson's book " Manhunt , The 12 day chase for Lincoln's killer".

Great pics!
This book was not exactly what I expected, however I was pleasantly surprised. It contains many interesting pictures, several of which I had not seen before in other Lincoln books. I read Swanson's book "The Manhunt", and this book would be a great supplement to that book...but it also is a good book that can stand on it's own!
