Cut and Paste: Language Arts: Language Arts (Cut & Paste)

Good for Review Work
I purchased this workbook for using over the summer with my son who is coming out of public school and transitioning to home school. I didn't want him to forget what he had learned in Kindergarten but I also didn't want to burden his summer by homeschooling all day. The compromise was to school in the mornings for 30-45 minutes until the pool opens and this workbook fits nicely in with my 8-10 minutes per subject plan. It is a black & white, 93 page workbook that turns language arts into arts & crafts. Each page involves cutting and gluing and each graphic on the page can be colored if your child desires. Some pages involve very simple paper crafts, such as making a spinning word wheel (requires one brad) or a paper strip word slider. My son is a tactile-kinesthetic learner and thus far has not had one complaint about cutting and pasting the words. He sometimes whines about having to read the directions in other workbooks but "magically" can read every word on the pages of this workbook when he's trying to figure out which word strip fits which blank box. It's more like solving a word puzzle and there is nearly ZERO handwriting required. (Most pages you can write your name at the top and you don't pick up a pencil again - you glue the correct typed word piece in place.) This is excellent for students who complain about writing anything or for those days where you just don't want to fight with them but you want them to have some sort of practice. That being said, the level of this book is decidedly KINDERGARTEN. It claims it is Grades 1-3 but there is not a single page in here that would really challenge my 6 year old. For example, the butterfly worksheet shown on the cover is on page 71, two-thirds of the way through the book. Page 89 near the very end is 'Color Words' where it shows a picture of a stop sign and space to glue the color word 'red' and a drawing of a gingerbread man with space to glue the color word 'brown'. The book doesn't get progressively harder - there are a sprinkling of somewhat challenging pages, like the U Bugs on pg. 53 where you have to glue lady bug word 'dots' in the correct ladybug shape depending on what /u/ sound is being made in words like juice, clue and flute. The options are /ui/, /ue/ and /u-e/. Still, you can see how this is more appropriate for kindergarten or easy summer work as opposed to worksheets you could actually copy for a third grade class. This workbook meets my needs for light, easy, fuss-free summer home school work to preserve the skills he's already learned. I also feel that it would be a great confidence builder if we find the other Language Arts curriculum for the fall is not meeting our needs and I want something in the interim while new curriculum is being shipped.

Amazing for our language advanced 4 year old, buy to make copies
These cut and paste books are fantastic for home schooling or classroom teachers. Overall I (and our 4 year daughter) are thrilled with the versatility, scope and learning fun of these cut and paste activity books. We have been using the first levels of the language arts, math and science books weekly. You do need to make copies before doing each activity, as activities are on both sides of each page. This makes it great for sharing with other Moms in home schooling groups, and is practical as you may wish to repeat an activity as a refresher the following year. We call our worksheets "Brain Games"; adding the concept of cutting and pasting makes learning even more enticing for daughter. Each book has a variety of different shapes to cut out; squares, rectangles, bug wings, ice cream cones, circles, fish, on various activities. The cutting variety is superb practice for little hands.A helpful NOTE: the subject of learning activity, rather than degree of difficulty; is sequenced in these "cut and paste" books. Hence, take a few mommy or teacher moments to look through the whole book and see which activities are at your child's current learning level, and keep in mind which activities will help them build to the next. Bottom line, former high school teacher with MS in Administration and Leadership gives these cut and paste books a grade A+ for ages 4-6.

Nice activities but don'e like double sided pages that require copying
I like this work book since it combines cutting activities and language arts. However, I do not like that the pages are double sided, so in order to do activities on both sides of the page, you would need to copy the page. Maybe it is good if you are working with multiple kids. In my case, it is just one child and I find myself not using the book as much as I wanted to due to a need to make copies.

The books are fun my son has improved
My 7 year old boy is enjoying the workbook he really needed help so I was excited to buy these books. He is the youngest out of his peers in 2nd grade class and needed help bad! We have been working on these books for 2-3 weeks now and he is a whole lot better. He’s getting better each day.The pages are front to back so u will be having to choose one side unless u print off the other side.I personally just needed to get him started w something so I bought it anyways since I read the reviews of some who mentioned that. Before I had waisted a ton of ink printing things online so I think this is better than doing that. He has fun working on them!

Good lessons but must reproduce for use
The lessons look good over-all but the pages are front and back so one side must be copied in order to use it (if you cut and paste from the book then you lose the other cut and paste on the backside of that page.)

Poorly designed
This book has great cut and paste activities. It will keep kids busy for a while. So far my child likes it. The reason for 3 stars is that the worksheets are poorly designed and have activities printed on both sides! The cut out parts do not match up so you are unable to do both sides. So you basically can only do half the book. I had to make photocopies of the back of the pages so we could do all activities.
