Q: What is the difference between double x slim taper and slim taper (no double x) - i mean what does double x stand for?

It means that it's slimmer, narrower if you will than a slim taper. I assume you know these are meant for sharpening saws so 2x is used on saws with a greater number of PPI, smaller teeth

Q: Is this a good size for sharpening a saw with 18tpi? It's a small backsaw if that matters

The teeth are quite fine on this file, and if the teeth on your saw are small, using the file towards the end (where it tapers smaller) would work well, I would think. As with the other answer, my "sharpenable" saws are 14tpi as well.

Q: What is the difference between this file and the 4" one?

I cannot be entirely sure of the other item you are referring to, but presumably you mean the "Bahco 4-187-04-2-0 X-Slim Taper Files, 4-Inch, Single Cut". The main differences between these two items is the overall length of the file and the width of the file (13/64" versus 15/64"). Practically, the width probably makes little difference. I use this file for sharpening fine hand saws, around 14-16 teeth per inch. I would recommend the longer file for such tasks, but it probably comes down to personal preference. Also note that even though it is a triangular file, there are six cutting edges (the thin edges cut too, which is required for tasks such as sharpening saws). Hope this helps.
