Q: How big is the gap in the back of the bench (the picture shows a big gap, is it comfortable, can a kid fall through it)?

A kid can fall through it BUT remember you can buy a seat and back cushion online ( which we have done) that you can tie on securely and that hides this gap.

Q: How far does it need be be out from the wall for the glider to move freely

I'd recommend that you position the glider no closer than 15 inches from a wall or other objects behind it.

Q: what size cushion should I purchase to fit this size seat?

I made mine. Cheaper than buying. 16"X 50"

Q: How many adults will the glider accommodate?

The glider will accommodate two mid-sized adults. I'd say it would easily hold about 350 - 400 lbs.
