Well written but disturbing and confusing
I know this book is regarded as a modern classic, and I have to applaud the quality of the writing, especially in the early part of the novel. However towards the end it becomes confused and confusing, switching from one era to another and from one perspective to another. As an examination of an inter-racial and inter-class love affair in French colonial times, it is interesting and atmospheric. As an examination of a dysfunctional, fatherless family, it is disturbing. The author writes with an objectivity that is rare, looking back at her younger self (this is a highly autobiographical novel) but it is not without its faults. This was read by my French book group and the above represents the shared opinions of its members.

Notes in German...
As far as I can see neither the product description nor any or the reviews have mentioned the important fact that the notes are in German, which sadly, I don't speak.
