End game performance, 3 watts into 32Ω and 5.2v DAC for expansion
I just got the new firmware flashed and the performance is right there with much more expensive stacks I've got. To update, load the flash program and open the file included. Then turn off and hold the jog wheel 5 seconds while you hit the power switch to on in the back. It'll be a dark display with no LED if you did it. Then hit "connect" in the software and it'll take 15 or so seconds. If it finishes in 1-2 seconds it might mean your chose an incorrect flash file. Don't worry though, you can't brick these even if you do it, it'll run a check and skip over it. 3 watts into 32 ohm really is good power, even for my Hifiman He6se (though doing a big preamp reduction for EQ will need more power). With stock settings, it'll power anything you have. They fixed a lot of issues in the cheaper models like the DL200, no sound tick when changing bit rates, it's all smooth. Also this doesn't run hot or even warm like some other powerful amps or combos. The sound is completely transparent, but there's filter and color options which in combination, really will customize the sound. The colors add distortion in the 2nd and 3rd harmonic, and the filters make a small difference. The default usually has the best performance, but it's a personal choice depending the music you like. It's a huge value compared to the Topping DX9 which has more power, but the price is sky high (and they sound the same). It's a combo unit so it always has perfect channel matching, which gamers will like since that improves imaging accuracy (provided your headphones are good also). The form factor hits full size amplifiers on it. The latest firmware is important since I updated right off the bat and didn't experience any problems with playback or other issues some other reviewers complained about. I have four of them currently, so I would have run into something, but it's smooth sailing on all of them. The balanced side has a higher gain setting, but the single end 1/4" jack is great for IEMs or even the Sennheiser HD700 300 ohm sounded great on that plug. I wouldn't go buy balanced cables until you try it first, they sound the same on either connector. Even the DT990 600ohm had plenty of power on the SE side. It's the value for money winner over similar offerings, and I can always add ampzilla in the future to expand since it's a 5.2volt DAC.

A step up from the c200
Lots of clean power if you need it. I’m not totally sure that I could tell the difference between the c200 and the DO400 dac section. But with power hungry headphones there’s a difference. I have the Dan Clarke audio open X, and they sound a bit anemic on the c200, but only when I compare them on the DO400. It’s probably placebo, but I also feel there’s a bit more musicality, less harsh trebles with banjos and violins, and the acoustic bass sounds more realistic. I prefer the heavier and larger footprint on this vs the c200. Using this with parametric EQ over Roon is endgame for me. Don’t feel like I’m missing anything sonically at all.

Good power and decent sound, but it has some shortcomings
I was looking for an all-in-one solution to replace my Schiit Modi+ (DAC) and Topping A30Pro (amp) stack. My main purpose was to clean up my desk area, but I also wanted bluetooth and balanced connections, which neither the Schiit nor Topping had. My target price range was ~$500.After a lot of research, I landed on the FIIO K9 (ESS version). The FIIO has all the features I wanted, the build quality is excellent, and the sound and power were a step up from the Schiit and Topping stack. While I was satisfied with the FIIO, the SMSL DO400 showed up under "Inspired by your browsing history" and it had all the features of the FIIO but with more power and a remote. I decided to buy it and do a comparison.The DO400 sounded similar to the FIIO, though seemed to lack the same level of detail and neutrality, but it had more power. One thing I noticed was when I cranked it up near the top end of the volume on high gain, it seemed to only get loud and the music lost its fullness. The headphones I tested with were the Sennheiser HD6XX & 560S, as well as the Beyerdynamic 177X Go, and Hifiman Sundara Closed Back (which I returned due to an issue with the cable). While none of those are too difficult to drive (the HD6XX has the highest impedance and can handle quite a bit of power), the DO400 behaved the same on all of them. While I would never listen to anything at the level I was testing at for an extended period, it highlighted what I perceived to be a lesser-quality amp.Something else worth noting, which was the main factor of why I returned the DO400, was that I could hear distortion/static when changing the volume. Another reason I decided not to keep it was the subpar build quality. They used thin sheet metal for the case, the headphone jacks were "crunchy" compared to the ones on the FIIO, and the volume know felt cheap.To anyone considering this all-in-one DAC/amp, I would suggest that you take a look at the FIIO K9. It has the same feature set (minus the remote and filters), is better built, and delivers what I perceive to be higher-quality audio.

Excellent dac amp with plenty of inputs and outputs
Have had for about a month a and the sound quality is excellent. I use primarily the balanced headphone outputs, and also use balanced output to connect to my Sabaj A20H amp. Works together well on a Windows 11 pc and using Tidal for steaming music. The display is clear and provides volume and output information at a glance. For the features and specifications, to me this is a great deal.

Gelungene High-End Alternative
Messen lassen mußte er sich an einem RME ADI-2 Pro FS R.... und verlor. Der Klangunterschied allerdings zum 2-3 mal teureren Konkurrenten ist bei dem Preisunterschied erstaunlich gering! Die Höhen etwas weniger fein aufgelöst und deshalb eine Betrachtung wert bei Kopfhörern die manchem zu Hell sind. Ausdrucksstarke, natürliche Mitten und ein Bass der etwas weniger Kontur und einen Hauch weniger Druck hat. Kleinere aber einwandfreie Bühne mit leicht geringerem Abstand der Instrumente. Verglichen mit einem Ananda Nano der sensibel auf schon 1dB Änderungen reagiert. Die FB des DO400 funktioniert einwandfrei, wenn auch keine Flutlicht-FB. Da kann sich RME ein Beispiel nehmen! Bei Verwendung als Pre-Amp muß zum Glück nicht auf die Lautstärke geachtet werden, sobald wieder über Kopfhörer gehört wird. Die letzte Laustärkeeinstellung wird automatisch gesetzt. Ein Hinweis zur 2V-Pegelanpassung über die XLR-Ausgabe, wäre hilfreich gewesen.Geniales kleines Gerät das nur im unverschämten Vergleich mit deutlich teurerer Hardware Unterschiede erkennen lässt. Verbesserungsvorschläge? Höhen besser auflösen, Filter wirkungsvoller gestalten, Höhen- und Tiefenregler Hard- oder Softwareseitig integrieren und das Ganze per Software steuerbar.Eine wirklich gute Alternative in Richtung High-End !

On ne peut pas tout écouter avec...
J'ai branché le SMSL DO400 avec un câble optique sur ma TV Samsung 8K et j'écoute avec un casque Sony WH1000XM5. Quand je suis sur les chaînes Orange, son de très bonne qualité, utilisation simple.Par contre, pour écouter Netflix, Disney + ou Youtube, par exemple, il est nécessaire de mettre le son de la TV sur PCM et non sur "auto", sinon cela ne marche pas du tout ! Il suffit de le savoir...

DAC Amplificatore per cuffie SMSL DO400
L’esigenza di acquistare un amplificatore per cuffie desktop è sorta per la mia ricerca di un audio che mi potesse soddisfare, più potente e lineare, perché “provengo” da una configurazione di una serie di cuffie, sbilanciate e, l’ultima acquistata, bilanciata, alimentate da un DAC/amplificatore portatile. DAC/amplificatore portatile abbastanza valido, dal suono un po’ caldo, ma comunque abbastanza lineare, dalla potenza ridotta visto che viene alimentato dal cellulare o dal tablet via USB.La mia esigenza era (ed è) quella di avere anche un amplificatore per cuffie che avesse incorporato anche un DAC, non le soluzioni DAC e amplificatori separati dato il mio budget limitato. Soluzione che avesse anche il più possibile componenti più recenti ed evoluti come il chip DAC, il chip per la gestione USB, quello per la gestione del bluetooth, nonché la sezione dedicata all’amplificazione.La mia scelta, dunque, sulla base di queste valutazioni, è ricaduta sull’SMSL DO400.HARDWAREIl DO400 è dotato infatti del chip DAC di nuova generazione ESS Sabre ES9039MSPRO ad 8 canali indipendenti, che garantisce al sistema di essere bilanciato anche col solo utilizzo di un singolo chip, con supporto PCM fino a 32 bit/768 kHz, DSD fino a DSD512, nonché supporto all’MQA e MQA-CD. È dotato inoltre del chip XMOS XU-316 che gestisce le connessioni in entrata. L’amplificazione per le cuffie è invece affidata a 4 chip TI TPA6120A che danno una potenza in uscita bilanciata di 6 W a 16 ohm e 3 W a 32 ohm. Il bluetooth (5.1) è gestito dal chip Qualcomm con supporto ai codec LDAC 24bit/96kHz, APTX anche HD, SBC. Non ultima, ma per me di grande importanza, è la presenza di un doppio alimentatore, schermato interno, al fine di garantire una certa quantità di corrente soprattutto per l'amplificazione, pur garantendo il rumore pari allo zero.DESIGN E COLLEGAMENTIAperta la scatola, il DO400 dà l’impressione di essere un dispositivo di alta fascia per consistenza, materiali di costruzione ed estetica dal cui frontale spiccano i connettori dorati da 6,35 mm sbilanciato, da 4,4 mm bilanciato e il connettore XLR bilanciato, una manopola da un bel feeling tattile che ruota a scatti delicati e un display che sembra “uscire” per estetica dal frontale. Display a colori che una volta acceso sembra essere un IPS. Dal posteriore tutto nero spiccano gli RCA dorati stereo sbilanciati, gli XLR stereo bilanciati in uscita (funge anche da preamplificatore qualora lo si volesse collegare ad un amplificatore finale o a delle casse amplificate) e le entrate Toslink, coassiale, USB per il collegamento al PC o Mac o altro, HDMI audio (I2S) e l’antennina per le trasmissioni bluetooth. Collegato al PC ho preferito impostare la frequenza di campionamento e la profondità in bit (in Win10) a 32 bit @ 384 kHz, al fine di ottenere la più alta qualità possibile.- Cosa che non è riportata da nessuna parte (!!) che viene rilevato via USB dallo smartphone Android. Funziona sia collegando il cavo in dotazione con un adattatore USB C OTG che con un cavo USB B – USB C (quello in pratica utilizzato soprattutto per le stampanti) a patto che lo spinotto USB B abbia la plastica interna di colore nero, altrimenti se è di colore bianco non entra nella presa posteriore del DO400. Naturalmente in questo modo si avrà il supporto PCM e DSD512 a 32 bit / 768 kHz ed MQA-CD e non sarà limitato al massimo ai 24bit/96kHz del LDAC del bluetooth (se supportato dallo smartphone, altrimenti si limiterà ai codec dello smartphone stesso). –MENU’Al menù si accede premendo la manopola sul frontale e ruotandola ci si sposta tra le voci o col telecomando che ha dei tasti basilari per far funzionare il DO400: tasto di selezione input, tra cui il bluetooth, tasto funzione che si può programmare da menù, tasto mute, cursore volume + e – e la solita ghiera circolare, ormai utilizzata dai recenti telecomandi che troviamo in casa.Il menù è così strutturato:• Inputs: USB – bluetooth – optical – coaxial – AES/EBU - I2S (HDMI)• Outputs: All line out – Headphone out - Balanced - Unbalanced• Filtro PCM: Filtro spento - Fase minima - Apodizzante - Lineare veloce – Lineare lento - Minimo veloce – Minimo lento - Bassa dispersione.• Filtro DSD• Guadagno HPA: Basso – Alto (per le cuffie a bassa e alta impedenza)• Colore del suono: Standard - Ricco 1/2/3 - Valvolare 1/2/3, Crystal 1/2/3.• Preampli mode: Variabile, il volume può essere regolato come un preamplificatore - Fixed, il volume è fisso sul livello di uscita massima• FN: puoi scegliere quale chiave assegnare a FN sul telecomando: Linea o cuffie – uscite – bluetooth - fase• DPLL: per regolare il jitter in 15 diverse impostazioni nei casi in cui si presentassero dei rumori al cambio di traccia audio con sorgenti di bassa qualità• Modalità I2S: normale - inversa• Fase audio: normale - inversa• Dimmer: per impostare il tempo di accensione del display (5 – 60 secondi)• Luminosità: luminosità del display• Reset alle impostazioni di fabbrica.Per un ascolto lineare ho reputato di tenere spento il filtro PCM e colore del suono su standard.ASCOLTOHo voluto effettuare le prove iniziali proprio per lo scopo per il quale ho acquistato il DO400: l’ascolto in cuffia. L’ho collegato di volta in volta via USB al PC, via bluetooth allo smartphone, via Toslink (collegamento ottico) ad un lettore CD e a un mediaplayer.Ho usato, perché ho solo queste in mio possesso, le cuffie, per altro tutte a bassa impedenza, FT3 over ear (32 Ohm) (cuffie aperte, ma io le reputo semiaperte), Momentum over ear (18 Ohm) (cuffie chiuse), Momentum 2 on ear (18 Ohm) (cuffie chiuse), Zs10 pro X (29 Ohm) (cuffie IEM). Tutte utilizzate col connettore jack stereo da 3,5 mm sbilanciato, tranne le FT3 con il jack da 4,4 mm bilanciato.Come audio test ho usato delle tracce a 24 bit @ 192 kHz presenti su Amazon music e dei campioni DSD 512 su internet liberi per l’ascolto.In assenza di audio non sono presenti rumori di fondo o fruscii... La schermatura degli alimentatori fa il proprio dovere.Il DO400 si presenta da subito molto bene con le cuffie sbilanciate: naturalmente con le cuffie chiuse, data appunto la loro “geometria”, il suono è un po’ caldo, con le IEM, invece, il suono è più lineare, tutto è più naturale, con una buona gamma dinamica.La situazione cambia completamente con le cuffie bilanciate. Aumenta ancora la gamma dinamica, il sound stage diventa più ampio, voce e strumenti sembrano posizionati su un palcoscenico virtuale, gli strumenti hanno un suono molto naturale, come se si stesse ascoltando dal vivo. Si ha una nuova esperienza d’ascolto con tutti i generi musicali a patto che la traccia audio sia ben masterizzata in origine.È la prima volta che riesco a percepire una risposta in frequenza così lineare. Non ero abituato a questo. Di solito, nell’ascolto in cuffia con uno smartphone e con quelle autoamplificate (bluetooth) o c’è più presenza di bassi o più di alti, dovendo quindi ricorrere necessariamente ad un equalizzatore.Qui non è così.I bassi sono corposi quando devono, veloci e presenti. Danno il giusto calore allo strumento, non colorano il resto della musica. I medi sono lineari, le voci naturali. Gli alti sono delicati, ma cristallini quando devono.Che dire, a me è sempre piaciuto ascoltare musica (e non suonarla, sono negato), ma mai mi era successo di farlo a questi livelli così elevati… non mi aspettavo tutte queste qualità sonore (e tecniche) da questo DAC amplificatore. Sono molto soddisfatto del mio acquisto.Avrei voluto provare il DO400 con cuffie magnetoplanari e con cuffie ad alta impedenza, perché come dicevo, purtroppo non le posseggo. Se mi dovesse mai accadere di usarne qualcuna, aggiornerò volentieri questa recensione.
