Knit and Purl Pets.
I have not had the time to do any of the projects inthis beautiful handcrafted book but I have glanced through some of the patterns and am certain even the beginner knitter would have no problems following them.

Faulty directions
I love the creatures they offer for projects BUT when I tried the cat I found the directions to be semi-awful. They tell you to save 5 stitches on a safety pin to be worked later as the tail. Then when it's time to knit the tail, they say slide 7 stitches from safety pin to make tail. Okay, which is it? 5 or 7?? I find mistakes like that very frustrating. I haven't tried any of the other patterns.PS That's not the only problem but I can't quite remember the other frustrations I faced.

Full of incorrect pattern directions.
I tried making the chicken several times, and thought it was me who messed something up... until the 4th time, and I knew there must be something wrong with the pattern. I checked the authors online site, and wrote her for the corrections. She gladly sent me a pdf with the corrections, and there are A LOT of them in the book. Cute patterns, but make sure you e-mail the author for the corrections, BEFORE you get started!

This book is well done
This book is well illustrated and well written I really like it. I have knitted a few animals from different pattern books but this book keeps me interested. I was so pleased when it arrived just before christmas. I have'nt had chance to make anything from it yet as I have the grand children staying for 3 weeks, but once there gone I hope knit something from the book.

Errors in book
I was very excited to get this book. I'm a avid knitter and this kind of stuff is right up my alley. I started knitting the chicken and the first mistake in the pattern was in row 6 where it says kft instead of kfb. Then after Rnd 35 it says to repeat rows 26-30 three times. Well, that didn't work at all. I started looking online to see if there were any corrections for the pattern and I finally found some on Ravalry. You are supposed to repeat rows 32-35 three times. Now I'm on the COMB section of the pattern and under Row 3 the directions say picot 5, k1, picot 4, etc... Well, I haven't done that before and there were no instructions in the book to clarify how to do it. I looked online and there were a number of different instructions for picot some casting on and some yo, not sure how it was supposed to be done so I'm just doing it my own way. This pattern is rated easy and I'm an experienced knitter and find it frustrating and confusing. In the time it has taken me to figure this out I could have knitted 2 hats! The animals are really cute but I'm not so sure I want to try another pattern.

fall in love with some new pets, but mind the printing errors
I absolutely love this book, knitting toys in the round is definetly the way to go - sewing up is always so much of a hassle, but this book minimises this. However, do beware of the printing errors. The copy I have only has the first bit of the bird pattern, and there is no pattern for carrots for the rabbits as detailed in the description. I am hoping that the publishers will put these errors right, and I can't say that there aren't any more?Fall in love with this book, but perhaps wait until it is reprinted without the errors, or at least give the publishers chance to add an extra page to cover them.

Autumn knitting project
I always get the urge to start knitting when the evenings draw in but usually abandon the project once Christmas is upon me. These little pets are just small enough to complete in an evening or two and they are so cute!

Lovely patterns, errata is available.
I was initially disappointed with this book - in my copy the pattern for the little birds goes from row 1 - 33 on page 12, then on page 15 these rows are repeated but the pattern then stops halfway through the first wing. This was particularly disappointing as it was the first pattern in the book and I had really wanted to knit it.The first pattern I attempted was the chameleon where I found a few minor typos, but then an error in row 44 gave me 2 more sts than I ought to have then after 2 rows knit plain a further typo in rnd 47 (K10, [M1, k1] 4 times, k19. 27sts) confused me - obviously if you count the sts written in the pattern the k19 at the end of the row ought to have been k9, but I had 11 sts due to the rnd 44 error. To complete the piece I had to fudge this by decreasing 2 sts over the next rnd and to be fair it hasn't spoiled the look of the completed chameleon but it was annoying at the time.As I really wanted to make the little bird pattern I contacted the publishers, David & Charles via their website and they have sent me a pdf of the missing instructions (apparently this particular error did not occur in the first print run of the book) and they have offered to post or e-mail me a further correction for the greyhound pattern and a chart error.I have completed the snake and hen patterns and have found no errors there, I'm on my second hen at the moment. So - 4 stars because I really love the look of the finished toys. The shaping is very clever and the toys whilst being quite small (many small enough to fit in a child's pocket) are full of personality. They use minimal amounts of yarn, mostly 4ply and dk so if you have ball ends to use up they're ideal. The 1 star I've docked is because there is an amount of slightly fiddly finishing to do on the chameleon and hen - shaping the legs and toes in i-cord on small gauge needles was a bit fineckety - and the hen with it's wattle, comb and tail had a lot of sewing-up and yarn ends to hide.As I have had such a prompt and courteous reply from the publishers, I have not taken the printing errors into account with my scoring of this book but I would encourage anyone who has come across errors in their copies of the book to follow my lead and let the publishers know. Perhaps their next print runs will be more successful!
