The right book at the right time
I read this book in one day and was stunned by the insights. I can honestly say it’s one of the most resonant books I’ve read in many many years of self-exploration. Perhaps it was possibly the timing but this book hit me right between the eyes and forced me gently to open them! I’ve now started the demanding work of doing the chapter exercises. Some of you will know how the tears can flow and how hard it is and yet feels so good . This book is for you!

The slap in the face I didn't know I needed
This book hooked me from the first sentence like it was talking about my actual life. I will be keeping this in my kindle arsenal for whenever I need a boost. It covers so much. I contacted the author personally to tell him how much I loved it.

Must read for all
This is a hard hitting relevant read in today's world. I should imagine everyone can either directly relate, or closely knows someone who has experienced difficulties and traumas of some degree or another and not properly resolved by using poor coping mechanisms. The tone is a casual easy read, with lots of examples and work through guides for the reader to engage with. Recommended read!

Wise and well-researched
An accessible guide to leading a more authentic, satisfying life. It combines homespun wisdom with a rich array of philosophical, psychological and literary sources, and is clearly laid out with helpful review questions at the end of each chapter. Highly recommend.

Break the cycles of trauma and dependency and find yourself again
Beyond the eye-catching title is an important and compassionate work to help anyone dealing with trauma and feeling trapped or lost in life. Dr Bob Beare uses his own life as an example to provide a roadmap to a life of purpose, authenticity, and, more importantly, hope. He doesn't shy away from asking the difficult questions and is honest with the reader that the journey will be painful and will require courage, but he makes sure we're not alone on the road to healing. Like all of Dr Beare's work, this book is littered with humour, wisdom, generosity of spirit and some great quotes to make his points - my favourite was by Goethe, "Only by joy and sorrow does a person know anything about themselves and their destiny". An excellent book, highly recommended.

well written and accessible
A solid intro for anyone new to shame and trauma work (via Jung and Brene Brown among others) as well as insightful guide for those already familiar with the concepts. Short worksheets at the end of each chapter invite the reader to take action.

Great exploration of trauma
Really loved this exploration of how trauma keeps you stuck. On particular, I loved learning about trauma and creativity, that ‘laziness is a lack of enthusiasm’ and how to charge your creativity.

Refreshing take on Mental Health
This book recognizes the importance of counseling and treatment but also dares to point out that medicating our way out of discomfort mostly benefits the pharmaceutical industry. I enjoyed the reference to CPT Kirk from Star Trek V, “I need my pain.” Trying and failing builds character and gives us the tools to overcome challenges. Overall a great book!
