The amplifier is specifically designed to boost signal for long cable runs.It gives a variable boost to higher frequencies (which suffer most on longer cable runs) but does not over amplify low frequencies,so you will not experience problems caused by over boosting the signal. The amplifier simply sits in line on the cable between the dish and receiver and the LNB switching voltage is used to power it (no need for a separate power supply)

Okay - didn't increase that much
UPDATED:I had to change my first review (below). There's a tree outside our house and it was getting to reduce picture quality to 35% then I tried this amplifier one more time and to my surprise, increased picture/image quality to above 55%. Well, okay now and it's working. I initially gave this item one star but I have given this four stars now. I'm happy.Old review:Reduced signal from Excellent to Poor !! Did nothing, it's the third of kind that I'm buying and all reduce signal drastically.
