TROPICA® - Black Mullberry (Morus nigra) - 200 SeedsWorth knowing: The ancient, cultural wood was already imported into Europe during the 16th century. This deciduous tree, with its slightly heart-shaped leaves, is mostly found in Palatinate. In the past, wine was made from the black and sweet mulberries, which do look like long-grown blackberry fruits. The hard wood and the root wood are also very much valued in marquetry. The tree is considered a symbol of wisdom in Greece. Origin: The mulberry tree is indigenous to the Near East. It has, however, been distributed over the Mediterranean region for a long time. Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors throughout the year. Sprinkle the relatively small seeds on moist cultivation soil and cover them thinly with the substratum. Stone containing soil, poor in nutrients and mixed with a quarter of sand, is also suitable for cultivation. Germination will follow after 2 to 5 weeks. Place / Light: The undemanding black mulberry is growing densely branched and up to 2 metres in height within its first 5 years. It thrives well in sunny and wind protected places with fertile, permeable ground. Care: Since tub cultivation is possible within the first years, the plant should be watered on a regular basis during its growing period. Do, however, avoid waterlogging. Flowering period is in May and June and the fruits will start to ripen in August. Fertilization with tub plant fertilizer once a month from May until September will suffice. Winter period: The black mulberry sheds all of its leaves druing autumn and is only slightly sensitive to frost during winter, that is to say the plant is not endangered in temperate zones like the Palatinate or Rhine-Hesse. Bonsai Suitability: Yes
