brilliant and creative
I liked the way the two convoluted stories combined bringing in an assortment of characters that somehow combined. Lovers of Georgette Heyer would also enjoy this book.

A super read.
A really terrific involved story, two great characters. Emma/Winifred and Oliver both finding personal justice and each other. I really enjoyed the full development of all the characters in the story.

Unputdownable - Jenny Hambly's best book yet
I have long been a fan of Jenny Hambly's novels and I think this is her best book yet so I'm delighted to see that it's just the first in what promises to be a very rich series of stories. She sets the scene well, conveying a real sense of Regency England. You cannot help but like Emma Wynne and Oliver Carne, two people who have really gone through some tough times and still have a lot at stake before they can even think about the happy ever after they both deserve. The suspense is reall well done and I had to keep reading until late into the night to find out what happened. Can't wait for the next book in the series.

easy reading
I lost interest probably about halfway through. Good reading for bed though as I could read a bit and put it down.

Another good story by Jenny Hambly
I love meeting old friends in new scenarios. It maintains a nice link between much loved books and makes one want to re-read their stories.Jenny Hambly writes such sweet stories with memorable characters and moments. I have read all her books at least two times šLook forward to the next book in the series.

Another well plotted romance.
I like the connections made between the characters and their back stories. I particularly like that their stories stop at the bedroom door. I would recommend it to readers who are not interested in other people's mating habits.

Well-written
A well-written historical romance with well drawn characters and an intricate plot.An interesting heroine with a harrowing backstory of betrayal and greed.

Very enjoyable
This is a sweet romance with multiple happy ever after endings and is obviously the start of a long series. The only problem I had with it was the fact that it started like a book in the middle of a series, with references to previous events and people that I found a bit frustrating as I wanted to know more, but I suppose all will be revealed in future books.

Good read for a lazy afternoon
Fast-paced, engaging without being exciting, and beautifully crafted language, this book will keep you entertained. Am not sure I will want to read this book again, but I will long remember the intriguing idea of a group of people helping women rendered helpless victims in a rigid and hypocritical patriarchy.

More interesting than most stories
The plot is more complicated and therefore more entertaining than many regency love stories. The characters were all likable, and the scene descriptions were well rendered.
