Bedwetting and Accidents Aren't Your Fault: Why Potty Accidents Happen and How to Make Them Stop

Enema-based treatment for encopresis. Changed our lives!!
My son began soiling his underwear shortly after successfully potty training at 3 yrs old. At first we thought he wasn’t actually potty trained and just needed more time. After a year or so, we consulted pediatrician who said it was ok and he’d grow out of it. My son soiled his underwear for years. We tried EVERYTHING. Rewards, punishments, sticker charts, timed sits after meals, etc. Sometimes we’d get a week without accidents, sometimes they were every day. It was unpredictable and was incredibly difficult for my son to deal with. He began hiding undies, lying about accidents, and often insisting he didn’t have to go- only to have an accident sometimes just minutes after. Sometimes feces would drop out of his pant leg onto the floor! Shortly before his 7th birthday, one day I begged him to tell me WHY he had an accident (as I’d done many times before), and he said something he’d never said before - “I didn’t feel it coming out”. I did some research and found the term encopresis and information about it being caused by constipation. We went to a pediatric GI specialist who prescribed Lactulose 2x a day and timed sits after meals. Every 3 months we’d go back for follow up and he’d feel my son’s belly for 2 minutes and then say keep doing what you’re doing - it’ll get better with time. We did that. For 2 1/2 years. Accidents never stopped. The longest ever clean at a time, was a week and a half. Then, he started having urine accidents. That’s when I found MOP in a google search about enuresis and encopresis.I was desperate. I joined an encopresis support group on Facebook and asked the parents there about MOP. Some had heard about it having good success rate. I bought this book - my son and I read it together. OH MY GOSH, he looked so relieved as we read it. He wanted to try the MOP protocol, so we did. Rest is history! It’s been 6 months and he is accident free!!!! He has regained the tone and sensation and is now in control of his bowel movements. He can feel when he has to go!!!Parents: if your child is encopretic and it is caused by either withholding or chronic constipation, THIS is the book you need to get your child on board with MOP. Onto a path of healing.MOP - It really really works!

HOLY CRAP! (pun intended) This book is awesome and MOP really works!!!!
So we didn't force our son to read this. I purchased it and my son saw it on the calendar and loved all the bright colors so he wanted me to read it. It really helped him understand why at 4+ years of age he was having accidents. It also helped him understand why we needed to use enemas to help him get over his issues. We are on day 34 of MOP for ourselves and our poop accidents are virtually non-existent. Our pee accidents have reduced probably by 90%. For a set of parents who were washing out underwear or throwing it away daily it has been a huge leap for our family. As a side note. One of the "tweaks" we made to the process is that we use the liquid glycerin suppositories (LGS)for our son regularly. However, on days where he's had a night time accident we use the fleet enema knowing that he has more blockage on that day than others. The fleet enemas get more out than the LGS but take longer to work. On the first day we used the enema he didn't poop right away. He looked at me defeated and said "Am I going to have an accident today?" 30 seconds later evacuation occurred and he was happy as a lark and relieved. His whole demeanor has changed because he is not afraid of what will come during the day.

Life Changing
This book was Life changing for us, the beginning of something new and, gulp, sadness to realize I'd been blaming the kiddo for accidents For Years :( Until I realized it was NOT HIS FAULT.If you want to talk parenting, find the "It's No Accident" book for yourself. But THIS was the book to help my kiddo see, in beautiful illustrations, what exactly is happening with his body and WHY he's having accidents. My kiddo is now almost 10 and we still go back to the illustrations -- the FireHose.... this is a rock in your body, this is water attacking that rock. And it's going to take time. But how else do you think that rock will disappear?I needed it. He needed it.And I've now sent this kiddo version of the book to family who question about constipation/ accidents in any way. It's So well spelled out the science behind the body and how to manage it. Thank you thank you for this book.

My kid was full of __it!
Great book except for enema info. I'm not doing that to my kid. I chose to increase his intake of veggies and fruit/veggie smoothies combined with using a squatty potty. He's pooping smooth and not wetting his bed for a week straight. It has made mornings so much better in our house! Who would have guessed he was just full of it?

I read this to him on a night that he was super tired from summer camp all day and then hamging ...
I have to admit, when infirst tead this to my 6 yo son I wasnt quite sure about it. I read this to him on a night that he was super tired from summer camp all day and then hamging with his buddies at night and he went to brd late. The next morning I asked him if he remembered the story from the night before and he repeated all of the key things. I read it the night before we started the enema. He remembered what it was and how it would help him. Later that night the process didnt bither him at all. He said it made his tummy feel better.Thank goodness this book was written. I know there are some negative reviews and everyone’s experience and opinion matters. I think its worth the try and you should talk to your child and see what they think. Im not going to select this book to read at night but my son does!

Very helpful
My 10-year-old daughter has encopresis. We enjoyed reading this book together and she felt much better about things. The book also gives some great strategies to help her. I have already recommended it to members of an encopresis support group.

A game changer for children (and their family) suffering with encopresis
Whilst the format of this book is quirky, the message and information contained within it is essential for anyone whose child has struggled for years with encopresis, as ours has. A daily enema regimen (along lots of patience and support) was the game changer for us and we’re finally making great progress

Great book for overcoming toileting problems
Great book for overcoming toileting problems. Funny and child friendly. My daughter loves it as it helps her on her way to recovery. Great illustrations for young minds. The book conveys necessary steps so the child grasps it and is able to cooperate with the process.
