Scanning Negatives and Slides: Digitizing Your Photographic Archives

Good for a Paucity of Titles
I was thrilled to find a book on this topic that is as up to date as it is. However, it really has little depth to it and I was disapointed in that respect. Still, there is a lot of detail and it is bueatifully illustrated. The book does a very good job at covering the essentials of film scanning and is a must for a beginner. I do not think there is any other book that hits the target so well. As more or less the "only show in town", it is a must for the library. It could do a much better job of addressing scanning software, how to use it, and technique in general. It would do well to offer more advice and guidance, opinions, pros/cons, etc. It could also cover the fundamentals in much more depth (histograms, curves, setting points, white balance, etc). Another 60-80 pages of this sort would make this tome dynamite. However, for me I did not find out about the book quite soon enough, but did find a few very good web sites that were helpful. Unfortuantely, the makers of scanners are not very helpful in their resoulces. For now, film scanning remains a learned art, but this book will help. For a newbie, this would be an outstanding start and save a lot of false starts. It is definitely helpful.

Helpful Reading
I found this to be very useful in helping me decide what scanner to purchase as it lightly covered the various software packages that were sold with film scanners. It also helped me decide not to buy less expensive software that was available to supplement the scanner package. The coverage of the software packages is not as detailed as I would have hoped for but it was adequate and accurate in its description.I did purchase a film scanner based on the facts presented in the book and I am satisfied with my purchase.

A great deal of specific information
The book "Scanning Negatives and Slides" by Sascha Steinhoff provides a good deal of specific information. He talks about Nikon scanners, Reflecta scanners, Epson scanners and others. There are many things to think about that can lead to better, quicker, quality scans and Mr Steinhoff seems to cover most of this ground. If you are hesitant to buy, check this book out with Safari Books Online and see for yourself. If you buy the book and use it just to buy a film scanner, you will probably save yourself some time, money and perhaps even a little heartache.

Interesting but dated
Needs to be updated. The recommendations are ancient.

Retired USNR O-6
I purchased the Plustek Optic Film 7200 + this tutorial book. The book was informative at first and convinced me to use the SilverFast SE software in lieu of the Quik-Scan. Unfortunately, the book scans over the SilverFast SE program and wants to tell you all about the Silverfast Ai programs and beyond. The author likes the NIKON scanners and really dwells on them. FYI - Silverfast out of Sarasota FL has a great Tech Support guy named Boris @ 941-921-4815 -- call between 3PM & 5:30 PM and he will talk you through your problems.

Scanning negatives
It helped would have liked to see something on 110 negatives and disk negatives. No one seems to have these or any suggestion on how to do 110 or disk negatives. Overall a good book.

Very good review of the topic
The authors do a very thorough job of discussing the topic of scanning slides. There is a lot of good information for someone who will or already has purchased a dedicated film scanner with the intent of making high-quality scans.

Disappointed with this book
I bought this book hoping to learn useful tips for scanning my collection of old family slides. I was very disappointed. There was little information that wasn't in the documentation included with the software, and many of the 'tips' were extremely obvious. For example, we learn that the ROC (Recovery Of Colour) function recovers the colour from faded slides. True, it does--''and the documentation for Nikon Scan tells you that, as well! The software included in the book, at least for Macintosh owners, doesn't quite live up to what is stated inside. You get a licensed version of Vuescan, a copy of Silverfast (which I didn't check), and a demo version of Photoshop CS2 which can't be loaded because the .dmg file contains no mountable file systems.

It is a must.
Really a good book to be part of my collection. I found it interesting, well written and it helped me a lot with the scan world.
