The Magister/Meister/Master
This historical novel is about part of the life of Meister Eckhart, a Dominican friar and prior, as well as professor, and the man who became his friend and disciple, Erich. The setting is the 1200s-1300s in Germany, where the Church held great power and vied with secular rulers for predominance. Eckhart's teachings were often prescient, but were perceived by some as dubiously unorthodox in his day. He taught the peasants in their own dialect instead of the Latin they could not comprehend, and his teachings are reminiscent of those of the Buddha (though Christianized). Empty yourself and become as nothing and you will find God within, he taught. On two occasions he debated a Franciscan and won the challenge, to the anger and resentment of many Franciscans. Self-awareness was a steady current of his thought, influencing Hegel, Schopenhauer, Karl Jaspers, Jung, and many other thinkers. Were we to read Th0mas Merton today we would not be strangers to his writings if we had read Eckhart first.A jealous Archbishop, spurred on by two hunters of heretics, was persuaded to bring charges of heresy against Eckhart. In the end, the Meister was called before the pope, John xxii, to defend his teachings. Eckhart died sometime during this process. His prosecutors became outraged that he escaped being burned at the stake through his demise. Today, Meister Eckhart is considered one of the greatest philosophers and theologians of his time, and his legacy is present in the Church in our time.Recommended for those who enjoy Medieval History and the study of Meister Eckhart's thoughts and words. Moreover, those interested in the psychology of infantile emotions in adult clerics as well as the personal destruction of who one unconsciously wishes to be will perhaps enjoy the dynamics of this work.
