Q: Is the vanilla actually gray and white as shown on my pc screen? or more yellow-white like i would expect of 'vanilla' color?

I ordered the vanilla. I received a white curtain with a completely different pattern than what was pictured. It was almost translucent. Little to no light blocking.

Q: do they have a rod pocket?

No rod pocket, just the grommets. I will say one more thing these curtains are lovely, they hang beautifully, just the right weight, and when closed filter the sun light. Very happy with curtains and would highly recommend.

Q: Does the vanilla color actually block light?

The vanilla curtains don't really block the light much. It would be more accurate to say that it's a tight weave that diffuses the light. They won't make the room completely dark like you would expect from standard blackout curtains. If you are trying to sleep during the day I'd recommend trying a darker color. That being said, I absolutely love mine! I don't require the room to be completely dark, so it works fine for me. They are good quality and look amazing.
