I mainly wanted to use it as it says it's compatible with their Sony Rhinoceros Cage which it is. The mounting is okay and it works but I wish it was a bit more elegant in its design. The mounting system to the actual camera is not great. It works but you have to fiddle with it to ensure you get it line up properly and even then it could be slightly odd. I got the original collar mount from Atoll and it's a lot more precise but it doesn't allow for cages. It's nice enough for 3 stars but could have been much better designed. Materials are good as usual.

SmallRig Rotatable Collar Mount Plate for Sony Alpha cameras. Excellent materials and craftsmanship. Camera rotation is smooth yet firm and has built-in stop points for horizontal and vertical orientations.Can be attached to the camera body directly, but I have mine attached to the SmallRig Rhinoceros Cage (see photos). The entire collar mount assembly can also be easily/quickly removed from the body via the Arch-Swiss type mounts when needed.Keep in mind the following: 1) the collar may restrict the use of some specific lenses, 2) removing the camera body cap is somewhat restricted once the collar is attached. Other than that, it’s a great piece of gear. Also of note, SmallRig’s top-notch customer support has exceeded all expectations. Very responsive to questions and concerns. Will definitely be purchasing additional SmallRIg gear in the future.

works great - the only issue is when i rotate it back tothe standard landscape position - the camera rotates a few mm too far so doesn't end up being straight. this should be fixed.

This device is for a very select group of people. Smallrig makes some of the best accessories for photography/videography and this is no exception. The build quality of this is spot on. It requires a fair amount of assembly to mount this to your camera body, if you frequently change portrait and landscape orientation while using a tripod this is a great tool. If you don't always shoot on a tripod and change orientation I am not certain this is the right option for you. A couple of things preclude me from adopting this full-time. First, it will not work with a cage. If you have built out a rig you will have to break it all down to a bare camera body to make this work. Second, given how the ring sits close to the face of the camera body, I can see how it might obstruct some lenses or at the very least make it difficult to mount and remove.Now with that said if you shoot in the studio and will be leaving the camera on the tripod and need to change orientation, this is without a doubt the easiest method by which to do so. It is built well and performs as intended. For my purposes, I think I prefer leaving my cage on and using an "L" bracket with ARCA to change orientation.

it use to be a hassle to go from landscape to vertical, having to unmount then mount, using cages and attaching plates. with this, just simply rotate. less time and ease of use.
