Visually Stunning Sci-Fi!
John Musker and Ron Clements’ 2002 animated film, “Treasure Planet,” is the 43rd Disney animated feature and adapts Robert Louis Stevenson’s 1881-1882 novel, “Treasure Island,” in a space opera setting. The story focuses on young Jim Hawkins (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who comes into possession of a map to Captain Flint’s Treasure Planet. He sets out to find the treasure in order to prove to his mother (Laurie Metcalf) that he’s not a juvenile delinquent and to rebuild her boarding house. Joining him is Dr. Delbert Doppler (David Hyde Pierce), an astronomer. They charter the RLS Legacy, captained by Amelia (Emma Thompson) and seen to by her first mate, Mr. Arrow (Roscoe Lee Browne). Hawkins meets John Silver (Brian Murray), a cyborg, and his companion Morph (Dane Davis). Later, the encounter the abandoned robot B.E.N. (Martin Short), who resembles Robin Williams’ portrayal of the Genie in “Aladdin.” Tying this film to earlier works of the Disney Renaissance, Tony Jay voices the narrator after previously providing voices for “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” Aesthetically, the only sci-fi franchise I can compare it to is “Doctor Who” since it blends Victorian-era costumes and institutions with extraterrestrials, robots, and spaceships. The ships resemble nineteenth-century ships of the line, with giant solar sails and rocket engines, but the characters are able to stand on deck even in the vacuum of space. “Treasure Planet” was part of a unique era in animation right around the turn of the millennium, where films began experimenting with style or blending styles, leading to works like “Titan A.E.” and “Atlantis: The Lost Empire.” These films were all ahead of their time and are worthy of appreciation not only for what they created but for their place in animation history. Unfortunately, “Shrek” came out in 2001 and changed what people expected of animated films for half a decade.

A Great Way to Spend an Afternoon
I thought that I had seen this movie before, but it turns out that I has mistaken it for the other disney movie "Atlantis". Speaking with a friend, it was suggested that I watch the movie and see for myself. Described as "The gem that disney refuses to admit" and "Trey Pley", I felt that I had to give it a chance.Overall, i'd say that it was a delightful disney romp. The characters all fit into nice tropes that are simple enough to learn, and they all have an emotional depth that leads to a very satisfying conclusion at the end. The animation is also in the style of the classic 90's-00's era, where images seem to flow so naturally togther, and all scenes are full of life. Long John Silver makes much use of this with his cyborg instruments, and the effects are often dazzling!Give a try

An Adventure Bigger than the Stars
Treasure Planet was not a blockbuster hit like its predecessors, through no fault of its own. It is one of Disney's rare cult classics, gathering a small but rabid following of fans who praise its beautiful, revolutionary art direction, including the use of fully-mapped CGI environments upon which the characters were animated, and the fun, genuine voices of the all-star cast including Emma Thompson, David Hyde Pierce, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt. It is a true Disney story with its young protagonist, Jim Hawkins, growing from a sullen teenager to a brave, hard-working young adult in one amazing adventure through space. The story was pulled from Robert Louis Stevenson's swashbuckling masterpiece Treasure Island, in which the young Jim Hawkins grows to care for his mentor John Silver and is therefore devastated to learn that his teacher is in fact a pirate in disguise, looking to mutiny along with the rest of the crew. The story is translated to sci-fi amazingly well, using a 70-30 ratio for the mise-en-scene of the whole thing. 70% is true to its original tale; characters wear 18th century fashion, the architecture of the spaceport is all Georgian, and the ship on which they travel is a beautiful three-mast schooner with a few modifiers for the journey. 30% is sci-fi, with laser guns, giant holographic treasure maps, and a crew of exotic aliens ranging from cute to downright scary.(Detractors of the movie quickly point out that the ship is not closed, and how could they be breathing in space anyway? The directors, Ron Clements and John Musker, revealed in the 'Art of...' book that the universe where they live does not work with the same properties as ours. There is air and weather in space, as well as nebulas and dying stars to make the journey treacherous.)Treasure Planet as a whole deserves more credit. It features all the basics of a Disney classic: a handsome, sympathetic main character; a diabolical antagonist who you come to care for as much as the heroes; a bumbling sidekick and his leading-lady love interest; and the slightly-annoying Third Act Addition character. The story carries as much heart as, say, Lion King or Pinocchio. The art is truly stunning; just sit back and watch the colors of space swirl across your TV screen, or the subtle-but-perfect facial expressions of the characters. Clements and Musker admit much time and thought was put into the eye movements of the characters, trying to make them look as real-life as possible.Last but not least, I need to mention and rave about the score. James Newton Howard really seemed to throw himself into making the soundtrack as beautifully classic as possible, with a full orchestra really setting the mood for a pirate tale set in the 1700's. It has several moments of pure adrenaline, pure bittersweet happiness, and pure longing for your own ship and crew to take to the stars. The picture quality for the Blu-ray is sound. The transition up from standard def did not result in the sparkling white of the drawn lines that afflicted the Beauty and the Beast Blu-ray; everything here is crisp and clear and smooth, and the upscale resulted in the most vibrant colors I've ever seen from this movie. The background of space in its swirls of blues and purples and the warm and cool colors of the digital lighting from fire to nighttime are better than they've ever been. The CGI parts of the movie were also upgraded with the release; one of the detractors of the film was that the brand-new computer graphic technology looked janky or amateur. Not anymore. Now it fits seamlessly into the 2D world and you barely notice it.The sound of the movie blew me right out of my living room. Granted, I do have Bose speakers, but I've watched my DVD of Treasure Planet plenty of times, and never before has it sounded so grand and clear. It was clearly tinkered with, to give even more life to this movie. I heard background noises that I've never noticed before, like the conversion had made them better. The ONLY, ONLY ONLY ONLY, problem I had with this release was that the special features have all been seen before. The only new parts were introductions to each section of feature (art direction, characters, animation, development, etc.) by Laurie Metcalf, the actress who voiced Jim's mother Sarah Hawkins. The interviews with the creators and directors were all on the DVD, and they're included on the Blu-ray in standard def, with black borders and pixellated images reminding you that you're watching featurettes from 10 years ago.Regardless, this is a Blu-ray worth buying and treasuring forever. Since I never, ever believed it would come out in 1080p glory, I'm about to fall to my knees and kiss Disney's boots. You will not regret giving this larger-than-life movie a chance, and I'm willing to bet you will find it a welcome addition to your Disney Blu-ray collection.

A Real Gem! (Pun intended)
This movie is so entertaining and heartfelt. The characters are extremely well written and the plot is amazing. My husband and I are both animators, and our boss is a writer. We know good film when we see it and this is by far one of the best animated films we’ve gotten to experience! I love the morality each character exhibits - it makes for a very believable world, and the animation is wildly impressive for its time. If you haven’t seen this one yet, please do yourself a favor and give it a chance!

Childhood Made Better
I got this movie when it first came out, when i was in second grade or so, and after that, I had viewed this movie so many times since, that it in the end was broken for to much use, and probably not caring for it too much - we were children who can blame us?So I recently found this Gift Set coming along with that novel, and I as a fresh reader wanted something physical in my hand to read instead of all the e-books, and then what could have been better then getting the novel that was made into the greatest movie of my childhood as well as the movie itself? The movie is great! It simply is nothing more the spectacular! The animations and background designs are all beyond its time! The story as well is really great and touching; making me cry every time. Containing about everything you want in a movie; Action, emotions, love and adventure.I also love the soundtrack, though it is not included, the movie will of course play the music occasionally, and it is just wonderful! Really capturing the story and feelings in the movie, as well as the pirate-theme.The book was beyond my imaginations! I have not completed it just yet, but it is wonderfully written with really good techniques as well as the way Louis write, to really catch your attention and not wanting to just stop reading it through. It is like you are living the story itself. As for the game, I have not tried it as my intensions of this purchase was more for just the movie and book, but for the two alone, it is really worth it, and I recommend every nostalgic fan of this movie, or curious persons, to buy this gift set to continue watching the movie, as well as reading the story behind it.

Treasure planet
This is a great film, one of the best for a long time, I don't understand Disney at the moment, they are not bringing out enough animated films, it's all Dreamworks at the moment, if Disney can make films this good, what is going on, they should be bringing out at least 2 animated films a year now that they brought Pixar studios as well from George Lucas, 4 billion dollars.

Underrated film
I grew up with classic Disney 2D animation like everyone else of a certain generation, but I never saw this film as a child/teen. I watched it recently as an adult and I think it's a seriously underrated film; I can't imagine how it stayed off my radar for so long. The characters are engaging, the story and universe are charming and inventive. Definitely recommended!
