Battle: Los Angeles [DVD] [2011]

Great film, has everything you want from an action flick. Good to see a classic story of good prevailing. I don’t want to watch a film where I have to guess the ending, use my imagination, I can do that at anytime, I want to be told a story and this does just that. I want a film where I get to see a start, middle and end, and this delivers. Got to be a classic by now. For a normal person this won’t disappoint. If you’re a self proclaimed film critic this is probably not for you, because you’re most likely a bell. Cheers

I never do this - write a review for a film that I've seen at the cinema long before it comes out on DVD - but I felt everyone, some of whom might be put off by the sniffy negative reviews in the press, should know - when deciding on purchasing - this simple fact: Battle: Los Angeles is great!It's Independence Day meets Saving Private Ryan - aliens v grunts in a joggly-camera, whirling ordnance, big explosion, LA-set Nirvana of shooting mayhem. The aliens are curiously limited - all that space travel and no decent AWACs or infra-red detection systems or ray guns - but that makes it a (reasonably) fair fight and allows Staff Sergeant Aaron Eckhart, Hoyt out of 'True Blood' and some other less familiar faces to actually trade fire to some effect with these extra-terrestrial scavengers.Once the 'introduce the characters' bit is over, the film becomes a series of military cliff-hangers leavened by the odd 'come on guys' speech. A bus chase (like in Speed) gets chucked in too. There are also 'borrowings' from 'Aliens,' but it feels more like homage than plagiarism.Crucially, it's played straight. There is no 'I know this is ridiculous' winking at the camera asides - just action. I think it's far more honest as a result. Some critics called it boorish and lacking in irony, but I think it does exactly what it says on the tin: massive shoot 'em up; Marines v Aliens; ludicrously exciting.What's not to like?If you know what films you like, you'll probably already know whether you want to see/own this film. It's not going to disappoint unlike some other 'actioners' I could name.Recommended.

I will certainly hope we never have to engage in this sort of war with REAL alien's.However lets for once replace these alien's with American troops in Afghanistan. American troops in Vietnam to an extent Russian troops in Ukraine and you can understand why the invading troops lost. We as a species MUST learn to fight ONLY to defend ourselves and THERE will be NO wars. Good movie all round. Hoping for the best for humanity.

The premise was good. The soundtrack was DIRE. It sounded like the same two pieces of music played over and over throughout the entire film and it was so irritating it spoilt the immersion.The Aliens and their vehicles and space ships were refreshingly different and believable.I liked that they tried to find the wounded Aliens weak spot on the field of battle rather than some boffins in a Military installation somewhere in a safe place. Made for a nice touch of realism. The hand held photography really made it feel like you were in the thick of things.The explosions werevisually good BUT the sound effects were over the top. Real explosions are quite different to Hollywoods portrayal.The spray and pray bullet hell firing seemed ridiculous. The weapons had scopes, they discovered the weak spot BUT still continue to fire blindly instead except when they suddenly had to win then they took down the targets first shot....What was all the Hoorah-ing and long pep talk rubbish????? Constant yelling and screaming when you are in the heart of enemy territory...... . I would expect they all would have been massacred pretty quickly in a real battle situation.Distant shots showed the Alien aircraft mass bombarding huge areas at once BUT the little group of heroes were not shelled into oblivion despite giving their position away with their comms chatter.This film could have been so much better instead of just mediocre.Worth a watch though.

Firstly, my son loves his PS3 game RESISTANCE- FALL OF MAN, and it's sequel (with the third chapter on the way next month and with a playable level available for download on this title) so if there was ever a film that would appeal to him...it would be this one.I'd heard and read some pretty scathing reviews of this film recently and so my bar of expectation was set at 'really low' What a pleasant surprise then, to find that it really was not half as bad as I was expecting it to be.Sure it's a bit thin on story, the characters are not even 2 dimensional, more like archetypes really...the untested leader, the fallen-from-grace sergeant, the suspicious comrades-in-arms, the heroic father figure, the child. All the standard cyphers that seem to tick the HOLLYWOOD machine's production boxes these days. But then, this is HOLLYWOOD we are talking about here...nobody's going to do something risky, or (heaven forbid!) actually new and imaginative.But for all of that...it sort of works, and fans of R-FOM and R2...and probably R3 when it arrives, will instantly know why. It is just balls-to-the-wall shoot'em that starts with a small amount of story and then you blast everything and anything in sight!Not bad, really. It certainly did not deserve the slamming it got.
