TROPICA® - Bird of Paradise (Strelitzia reginae) - 5 SeedsWorth knowing: The Strelitzia belongs to the banana family, produces large leaves of 1 metre in size and orange-blue flowers, unique in size reminding one of a Tropical bird‘s head. The first flowers appear after 4 to 6 years. One is, nevertheless rewarded for the long time waiting with a plant that flowers in spring, autumn and winter.Origin: The Strelitzia is native in South Africa and widely spread on the Canary Islands.Propagation: Seeds can be started indoors any time throughout the year. The seeds must be cleaned in soapy water and be poured over with boiling water, which will remove the wax layer and stimulate the seed. You then have to soak the seeds in water for about 12 hours, place them onto moist seed starting soil and cover them just thinly with earth. With even humidity and warmth, the seeds germinate after 3 to 6 weeks.Place / Light: The plant loves bright to sunny places, especially when facing South or North. During summer and autumn, the Strelitzia may as well be placed outdoors. A shady place will slow down the flowering processes.Care: Plant the Strelitzia in standard soil. Choose a large potting medium since the roots are growing quickly. Water plentifully during summer and fertilize with tub plant fertilizer from April until October.Winter period: Place the plant in a bright spot and water sporadically with temperatures varying from 8° to 20°C. Now and then, spray the plant with chalk-poor water. Old and brown leaves can be cut off at the stem.Bonsai Suitability: No
