Stephen Foster Song Book (Dover Song Collections) Paperback – Illustrated, June 1, 1974

Stephen Foster has written the largest number of "folk songs" of any American composer. Of course, his compositions are not folk songs by definition, but because they are so widely known, many of these pieces are thought to be just that.Within this volume there are a wide range of songs that the casual singer, voice student or professional singer can successfully work with. The accompaniments are extremely simple, and the vocal melodies are very reasonable for nearly any level and range, not exceeding an octave for the most part.This book is a collection of original sheet music, and it takes the original printing and artwork, which provides a great view into the music. However, the dated notation can make for some difficult reading, particularly with the piano parts. Fortunately, these pieces are simple enough that this should not affect the accompanist.

Years ago, I had access to facsimiles of Foster songs that I used in arranging and performance. I only had access to about five songs. It was nice to discover a book that had so many of them in one volume. I will use this for years.

I have purchased two song books. Both were listed as acceptable. One came in at perfect like new condition. This one came today and should have been listed barely acceptable or poor. I can still use it though but I'll have to tear it apart and use the pages individually.

I am Stephen Foster's great grand niece. My dad was William B. Foster. His dad was William B. Foster. His dad was Morrison Foster, my great grand father, who was Stephen Foster's brother. I am Katharine Anne Foster! And I am very happy to have this book. I can play all these on the piano and violin and sing to them. We grew up with them. Campdown races!

It has music with the original print form that is easy to play on the piano and includes the words that accompany the music.We love it very much. Stephen Foster is truly a master of fine folk music. A wonderful piece of real Americana here. A treasury of beautiful songs so seldom heard anymore because they are not P.C.. No matter that they are a part of our history. Get this wonderful collection of sheet music while it is still available.

Reproductions or original covers are interesting. Scores are clear but very in usability. Some are playable as solos. Some are not. I bought a used copy that was totally decent. I'm glad I bought it! No matter how you intend to use it, you should find useful material. Keys and ranges very as do accompaniment styles and number of voices.

My parents always had me play Stephen Foster songs. They enjoyed getting around the piano, with guests, and sing together. This book is excellent with stories about the songs and brings back many good memories for me.
