This is the story of the Home Guard,told in dozens of reminiscences,from its inception in May 1940 as the Local Volunteer Reserves (LVD) with their red and black armbands and walking sticks used as pretend rifles became, at Churchills insistence, the Home Guard in July 1940.The book relates the development of the Home Guard from using picks and shovels to a well equipped entity that would have given the Nazis what for.One of my abiding memories is the day in 1940 when I was twelve seeing my father parade on the Braid hills in Edinburgh with his walking stick over his shoulder.From that day I was inspired to know we would never be beaten.There are no Scottish memories.A remarkable book for those who remember the dark days.

Excellent book. Well written and gave us a better insight to what the "brits" went through during the 2nd World War

This book is a 2012 reprint of the original 1990 edition & could have done with better editing to avoid duplication.Nevertheless it is interesting to read theses 'first hand' accounts of the old soldiers.As these veterans of the 1939-1945 conflict are disappearing fast it is great that someone took the initiative to record their tales for posterity,before it was too late.
