Q: What are the waist and inseam dimensions for the Small and Medium sizes? I'm 5'8" and wondering what size to purchase.

Not sure if this gonna help. I'm 6'1" and have a pair of XL. The inseam is 32". The waist is elastic and without stretching them out is about 32" as well. The pants are baggy by design so they can fit over many types of clothing.

Q: What is the unboxed weight of these pants? The description gives the shipping weight as 1 pound but the item weight as 1.6 pounds!

I just measured the weight of the pants on a postal scale and they weighted 12.5 oz. Hope this helps.

Q: How packable and lightweight are these? Would they work for backpacking? I'm not a super-light packer, but don't want something really heavy.

Very light and packable, they fit easily in my backpack.

Q: My pants size is 36 X 29. Based on comments I see, I am assuming that a large would fit and not be too big. Am I correct?

I wear a 42 and a 2X is perfect so yes that sounds right
