The Last Changeling: Volume 1 (The Enigma Wars)
J**.
A fae fantasy, about the creatures of folklore not Disney.
I read this book end to end inside a day. At 623 pages it's not short, but it is enthralling - everything went by the wayside so I could finish it. Binge reading... is it a thing? The story doesn't lose pace and I love how famous historical encounters with fairyfolk and their haunts are woven through with enough aplomb to make you wonder. Maher has clearly researched the subject deeply. These are not the twee, cutesy characters beloved of small children, but cold creatures akin to insects. So sad the stories of the changelings too.I don't regret a day away with the fairies and I'm looking forward to more.

and I never tire of its excellent story line
one of the most readable books in my library. I have re-read it many times, and I never tire of its excellent story line , characters and atmosphere.Let alone the historical links and connections , I really really really want EWB 2, 3 4 5 etc etc etc.I've done most SciFi, Fantasy and all their variations , this is a real star !!

Really enjoyable melange of folklore and history
Really enjoyed reading this. I liked the way it drew on recent history and older faery folklore to create a compelling read - I found it unputdownable. Can't wait for Book 2.But it could have used a really good proofreader. There were a lot of run-on sentences (grammatically incorrect) and the author needs to learn the difference between "discrete" and "discreet".

Good novel but please edit it properly
This is a funny, inventive and strangely moving book. The author can definitely write. But it seems that no one has edited it. There is reams of punctuation simply missing. I don't quite understand what's happened here. I can only assume this is self-published and hasn't been copy edited. In which case, please please FR Maher, pay some to copy-edit it and publish a new edition. It is too good a book to be spoiled by constant errors.

Enjoyable
I really enjoyed this book .It was a random choice recommended by Amazon so it didn't cost much. The story is intriguing and kept my attention and I would like to read a sequel and learn more about "D" . The only thing that needs attention is the spelling of the word "discreet".It has been spelled "discrete" all the way through the book and I know the difference in meaning of the two words and the wrong one has been used.

An excellent book which captures much of the mystique and darkness ...
An excellent book which captures much of the mystique and darkness of the Faerie realm. I think the way that the denizens of the faerie world can be killed seems a little too easy for them to have been around for so many centuries without learning how to protect themselves.... but that's a small quibble. Looking forward to the next installment.

A clever and engaging novel that will certainly subvert your ideas of fairy tales, real people and historical events.
A clever and engaging novel that will certainly subvert your ideas of fairy tales, real people and historical events. The author has an intelligent and keen eye for bringing fantasy alternatives to the society we know and has the skill to make you question the world. I really enjoyed this and looking forward to reading more from F R Maher.

Compelling read
Very well researched book on faeries. Jumped about a lot early on but worth sticking with. Some parts needed more fleshing out.
