Super helpful
This book is awesome. It is perfectly targeted for medical students and is the paragon of “high-yield” information. My surgery preceptors asked me several questions that were listed at the end of the chapters as commonly asked (or “pimped”) questions. Great for reading through before you scrub into a surgery (takes ~5-15 minutes to either skim or read more carefully). My only “complaint” is that there aren’t even more chapters! (Maybe some common transplants? Perhaps exploratory laparotomy?) Thank you for writing!

The best resource for med students on their surgery clerkship!
This book has been a lifesaver for my core surgery clerkship and I would definitely recommend it to all medical students! It is written in a way that is easily digestible for medical students on their surgery clerkship yet still very comprehensive. The book is broken down into short chapters with each chapter covering a common procedure you will probably see on the rotation. Each chapter covers an overview of medical conditions that would require a certain procedure, how that procedure is done and reasoning for why the procedure is done that way, complications, a classic case example, and common questions you may be asked in the OR. It is perfect for prepping for cases you expect to see the next day. An amazing resource, have yet to come across anything else like it!

Great resource and foundation for surgery clerkship. A must-read for your core surgery rotation.
Dr. Sarpel's guide is essential for medical school surgery clerkships. I found it to be a comprehensive resource detailing the most commonly seen and tested surgeries while still teaching at the medical student level. It was very helpful to read ahead on upcoming cases as the guide has indications, patient presentation, surgery steps/anatomy, and possible complications for each common surgery. There are also corresponding questions for each chapter. Great to both prepare for the surgery shelf, prepare for cases/pimping, and further cement your foundational understanding of each surgery.A must-read for your core surgery rotation.
