Eh... OK I guess, depending on what you need
Do you need:Subsistence-level food so you don't starve?High-activity fuel?A day? A week?"Emergency" rations can be used for a lot of things. This stuff sounds all advanced and professional, but does not seem as versatile as it could be for a few reasons:1. Saturated fat level is, if you consume an entire 9-bar package in a day, 300% of RDA (a maximum for satfat). Most people can handle this OK for a while, but some people tend to get diarrhea with an overload. Maybe you are one of those Keto Bros who thinks saturated fat is magic juice, but normal people won't like this.2. Almost no vitamin/micronutrient content, except for what I think is naturally occurring in the wheat. You don't need 100% of everything, but a minimal level of more key micro nutrients would be needed if you want to have this handy in a rescue kit for people who might have been unfed for a while before you get to them. Or for a long-term shelter plan.3. Only the full 9-bar set is vacuum sealed. Individual bars are just wrapped in dry unsealed paper. Once you break the seal on the set of 9 bars (2385 calories total), they must be eaten within 72 hours. So if you want to keep a small emergency meal in a glove box, bag, etc, as a backup to other things, you have to carry the whole box (roughly 5x4x2 inches and weighing a little over a pound).4. Almost no salt content (2mg is basically none). I know you are probably thinking "OMG I don't want salt, that will make me thirsty!" Well, most food you do not think of as making you thirsty does in fact contain enough salt, just not extreme junk food levels. If you are actually burning through 2300 calories per day, or if you've been in a variety of bad conditions for a while, you probably have low salt levels and need _some_. For example, a handful of baby carrots has 50mg. Cup of broccoli? 60mg. This is normal necessary nutrition.Overall taste is OK. They did add some soy protein, which is the only obvious nutritional effort. It's very crumbly and hard to eat without making a small mess.OK, so here's the recap:- For a 1-day emergency, most of the negatives above won't be a problem as long as you are not sensitive to high amounts of saturated fat.- For less than a day, like if you drop your sandwich in the river, you would have to keep a full pound of this in your emergency kit and throw out most of it after opening.- For much more than a day, these are just terrible nutritionally. If you had a decent meal yesterday, you might be OK for a little while. If you are providing aid to people arriving in bad health, these are only good because they aren't moldy.

I could eat these if I were starving
7/9/2022: Compact Provisions Emergency Food Supply and Non-Perishable Survival Rations for Disaster Kits. 2,385 Calories, 72g Protein Per Box. 12 PackI received 12 boxes, each of which have 9 bars. When you first open the box, you find all 9 bars wrapped together in a foil wrapper. (I was not able to tear this open without scissors, although it seemed like I was supposed to be able to - maybe the one I opened so far was harder than usual.)Inside the foil there are 9 individually wrapped bars, however they just have a paper wrapper that is not not sealed tightly. The boxes aren't meant to be resealed, and they say that each box feeds 1 adult for 1 day (or 1 adult for 2 days in survival mode), so I don't think they're intended to sit on the shelf for long after being opened. The bars themselves look like they're going to be very dense, but in fact they are soft and crumbly. They break apart very easily and leave crumbs everywhere if you're not careful. They are a little dry, and I'm not sure if I could eat them without also drinking a lot of water (although I tend to have a pretty dry mouth, so it might not be as bad for others). The taste.. well.. I could eat these if I were starving. My original hope was that I'd be able to use these to supplement my diet (I'm supposed to be eating more calories every day), but I don't see that happening. I think these are good as short-term emergency food. It is better than starving, for sure, so they fit the criteria of emergency food. I wouldn't eat these if there was any other food around, though.

Tasty Long Term (5 years!) Emergency Survival Ration Bars
Emergency Food Bars - ReviewWhen I saw these emergency survival rations I thought “might not be a bad idea”. However, I admit to being a bit trepidatious about doing so (think backpacking meals here), but after reading the ingredients I wanted to give them a try.PACKAGING: As shown the cakes come in a box, and are sealed into a vacuum packed foil pouch. Thoughtfully, the pouch has an easy tear slit at the top, so you don’t have to fight with the packaging to access the bars. The 9 bars are also wrapped together by a thin plastic film, which is also very easy to remove. Each individual bar, which has 2 pieces in it, is in a paper wrapper.TEXTURE: These bars are little cakes that are mildly crumbly in texture and not dry like a cracker. They breakdown quickly in your mouth.TASTSE: Mildly sweet in flavor, and actually quite tasty and the after taste is quite pleasant, too. You shouldn’t have any problem getting kids to eat these.USE BY: The stability is listed as 5 years and as shown in one of the photos, my package has an use-by stamp on the box of 7.18.2027: Awesomeness!WATER: You don’t need any water to eat these, but I’d recommend drinking something to go along with them because, you know, hydration! Also, while I haven’t tried this, the instructions say you can add hot water to make a porridge.IN CONCLUSION: I’ll be keeping several boxes in our vehicles and the rest in the pantry at home. While I hope I never need them for their intended use, it’s comforting to know that they are there ready-to-go if I do need them. I think that COMPACT PROVISIONS did an excellent job in the development of these emergency ration bars and I applaud their philanthropic stance, too.

You'll never want to eat it but better to have it
So these are emergency supplies. Note that. These are emergency supplies. I would be amazed if anyone opted to buy these because they wanted to eat them. They aren't horrible but these aren't winning any awards for taste, or honorable mentions. What they do provide is super shelf stable, nutrition-dense, meal bars (well meal boxes since each 'day severing' is 1 box/9 bars.). Running between 7-9$ per day it's a good price for being prepared with something that will be the same for multiple years sitting with your supplies. The bars have a purpose when it comes down to it of keeping you alive. At 2300+ calories a day that's enough to keep you going while being active at a box a day or in survival situations the fact that the boxes break down to 9 bars around 265 calories per bar gives you the ability to ration them further without spoiling the whole box.You don't want to eat them, but again if you need them they are a smart thing to have when the need is there.
