What a great film

I went to see Pirates of the Caribbean with my daughters several years ago and embarrassed them both as I let out a yelp of recognition at one of the scenes in that film. 'It is an homage to the Crimson Pirate' I hissed to them both, neither of whom were the slightest bit interested and just wanted their mother to shut up. Therefore, I was delighted when a bloke sitting in front of me turned round said YES and gave me a high five. This is a fantastic movie. I first saw it when I was about 12 and remember it was shown at my local in a double bill with Calamity Jane. In those days you could sit and watch the programme over and over again and I duly did this one day during my school holidays.Burt Lancaster used to work in a circus and appeared in another great movie, Trapeze, where his skills are utilised to the full as in this film. Lots of fun, chases, acrobatics and derring do it is a fantastic movie and so glad it is available so I can watch and remember

Watched this with my 20 year old son, who enjoyed it as much as I did, now in my 66 year. I would have given it 5 star had they either; found a slightly better print or, cleaned up the one they had a little. In some scenes, lots of little white flecks becomes visible. -Having said that, don't let that hold you back from buying this Spanish import, which I believe is the only place this film has been released on Blu-ray. (Shame on other countries). It is hugely enjoyable and has probably never looked better on either; video, DVD, or Blu-ray. You would have had to have seen an early print in the cinema to have seen it in any better condition. Several languages can be selected; English being one of them, and you can deselect subtitles; I did this by using my players; "Play back" settings. If you are looking for a fun way to spend 1H. 45 min. look no further. Enjoy Burt Lancaster & Nick Cravat at their acrobatic best.

its a hoot of a movie

It's a classic. My childhood favourite. Maybe a little dated for my kids but I still love it. But Lancaster and Nick Cravat are brilliant.

Burt Lancaster is the daring pirate Captain Vallo, mixing plunder and politics with his plan to sell captured arms to rebels on the island of Cobra and then sell the information about the rebels to the corrupt island officals...until he falls for the pretty daughter of the captured rebel leader, El Libre.The Crimson Pirate could be regarded as the spititual grandfather of Pirates of the Carribbean; there's plenty of action for Lancaster and his one-time circus partner Nick Cravet to show off their acrobatic prowess, a broad streak of humour and a swashbuckling finale that made me laugh out loud (I won't spoil it; suffice to say it's the only pirate film I've ever seen that features a hot air balloon!).Despite other customer comments, the DVD picture quality on my copy was fine. Sadly not widescreen and no extras, but these are minor quibbles and only to be expected for a film that's over 50 years old! If you're looking for a family-friendly swashbuckler then this could be it.

One of my favourites from when I was young. I brought this for my 15 year old Special Needs son, and the whole family watched it and lapped it up. A good old-fashioned romp that doesn't have the modern gratuitous violence or sex scenes. Lancaster is brilliant, and his partner in crime plays a superb mimic.The action sequences are outstanding, the plot works, and nobody is taking things too seriously, which is in stark contrast to the a lot of the overly serious stuff coming out of Hollywood at the moment.Love this one.

When the feared and daring pirate, Captain Vallo, steals a shipment of arms from the English Navy, he promises to run the guns to a rebellion uprising in the Caribbean islands. His sneaky plan also including that once the guns have been sold, he will then sell out the rebels' whereabouts to the English Navy in hope of securing an even greater bounty for his crew. Rascally to be sure..But when Captain Vallo, 'The Crimson Pirate', falls for the feisty daughter of the rebel chief, his actions become a law unto their own leading him down a plank of heroism, double~crosses, adventure and mutiny..!Great action/adventure with Lancaster as the titular hero. The story is lively and high in action, with Lancaster and his oft collaborator Nick Cravat (memorable as Lancaster's mute sidekick) pulling out the stops, to give the audience plenty of laughs and excitement, as they perform countless routines and set pieces involving inventive slapstick, acrobatic physical comedy and gymnastic swashbuckling fisticuffs. The sets and costumes, although garishly 'technicolour', are really quite splendid and this has some fantastic moments of derring~do for all the family, with seemingly 85% of the entire cast, at some point wearing a stripy outfit, and being kicked up the rump and over the side of a galleon.The score for The Crimson Pirate scurrying and energetic, fitting perfectly with the images.With the biggest downsides being that although a young(er) Christopher Lee is in it, as a baddie, he never gets the opportunity to provide us with the kind of dastardly, swashbuckling performance he would later become famous for. Also, there is no comedy parrot(!), and Bartok, though doing a decent job as the sullen heroine, doesn't really get enough chance to shine or win over the audience.Ultimately this is a fine pirate movie and for my money, though aged, should still appeal to any family viewing. I after all, hadn't seen this for 30+ years, and in all that time, it has lost none of it's endearing entertainment value which I remembered so fondly as a kid.Other recommendations along similar lines would be The Black Shield of Falworth [Blu-ray] [1954], Flame & The Arrow [DVD] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] and also the excellent Project A [DVD]The disc under review was the UK orbit media release, which although full screen and hardly the perfect viewing experience, is certainly watchable when considering the age of the feature and the expectations of your average, casual viewer. There are zero extras other than a list of Orbit's other releases.4.25/5

Gewoon goed

Difficile pour ne pas écrire impossible d'acquérir ce film sur le territoire Français du moins, avec une vraie version Française. Je désespérais de revoir ce long métrage et puis...en Espagne un bluray avec vf attiremon attention, j'ose le commander et quelle bonne surprise!Non seulement le film est bien avec vf mais le bluray est également de très bonne qualitéInutile de dire que je retenterais l'expérience puisque les éditeurs Français ne savent pas satisfaire lesattentes des consommateurs, préfèrent éditer 15 fois les mêmes titres plutôt que de proposer des attendus.Trop frileux nos éditeurs nationaux, trop désireux d'engranger du fric et bien tant pis puisquebeaucoup de films existent chez nos voisins avec vf et parfois de meilleure qualité que certains films sur notre sol.

Did this movie meet my expectations, Amazon? WOW! I'll say!! I first saw Crimson Pirate in 1956. It blew my 29 year old self away. Even more so 60 years later. The Prates of the Caribbean is not in the same league, Burt Lancaster and his silent partner had careers as circus high wire performers so they do their own stunts. The chase sequences are unforgettable. Later four of them are cast adrift Handcuffed the the sides of a rowing boat. The inventor rocks the boat until it turns turtle and they walk the ocean floor to land,, breathing the air trapped above them! Hilarious chase sequences follow until they escape the upturned boat. Of course the pirates under Captain Burt win over the cruel Governor's henchmen at the end. Once more I was a spellbound 29 year old. GREAT!
