From outside to inside, vision!
Yep, this is the way a book should be.Interesting to read and pictures of the highest quality. And I love the work of John Pawson.

Too idealistic to be any help to the average house builder.
Bit ethereal for the average house builder and designer. I'm a bit more of a nuts and bolts man not a dreamer.

Utterly useless book with a completely misleading title
Utterly useless book with a completely misleading title. No practical help whatsoever. Just some pretty pictures of some grand designs style houses

Great Little book
Good for a quick history and quick ideas also a great interview of an architect who designed his own house. Good for someone studying architecture and only takes an hour or so to read

Nice little survey
I'll agree that the book doesn't explain how to design a house (attempting to do so in 110 page book would be a fail, a priori), but it does present a set of interesting examples selected from a particular viewpoint centered on materials and situatedness. The Pawson case study is OK at best, but aside from the "how to design a chair" book, the case studies in this series have been the weakest parts of the books.
