So Much Information to Consume!!!
Essential Linguistics: What You Need to Know to Teach Reading, ESL, Spelling, Phonics, and Grammar was a required textbook for my Applied Linguistics Class in graduate school. Still to this day, I feel that my professor picked the most valuable and the most informational textbook when she chose this book for our class. How are words even words in the English language? How do we dissect our native language? How do we breakdown English for someone who is brand new to the language? All these answers and many more answers to many more questions can be located in this book. On Amazon, I didn't even pay half of the price for this book that my college bookstore was asking for. I still use this book as an educator today. The book was in the mailbox just days after it was purchased and was in such great used condition that it indeed looked like a new book.

That that that that
I don't mean to be a critic but the authors are clearly well read so please tell me why you use the word THAT about every fourth word? It makes your book so hard to read. I ask you to take one simple test, read any sentence in the book which has the word THAT, and this will be almost every sentence, then reread the sentence and leave out THAT, see if the sentence sounds so much better. If you really think you need a THAT then replace the word with WHICH or THIS but, I believe you will find you don't need anything in the place of THAT.By the way this is the only thing I took away from my legal writing class in law school, sure makes reading your book easier.Buddy Clark Essential Linguistics: What You Need to Know to Teach Reading, ESL, Spelling, Phonics, and Grammar

I am about halfway through the book now. I have really liked how it is written although at some points I feel that it is repetitive and perhaps not entirely helpful. The shipping was excellent though and the condition of the book was just as advertised.

Great text
I really enjoyed this book. For the most part, it was easy to read, helpful, and made a lot of sense. The only thing I did not like was how the authors used their own form of IPA throughout the text. Because of the use of non-traditional IPA, it was a little hard to follow.

Interesting read. Very Informative.
This book was required for school but I really enjoyed learning about linguistics. It is sometimes redundant in the things it says over and over but I really learned a lot about this interesting subject. It gave me a lot to think about!

Straightforward
This will not make you fluent in IPA but it explains a lot about the world of linguistics as well as linguistic theory. The strategies that were shared were nothing deep nor earth-shattering.
