The Oil-Protein Diet Cookbook

The Budwig protocol and liver cancer
I have updated this comment as of Oct. 2015.As others here have commented, the Budwig protocol centers around what is truly a healthy diet and is also an effective way to fight cancer; at least, it has turned out to be so in the case of a close family member of mine with liver cancer, who refused chemo and other usual treatments after being told that none of them could do more than prolong his life--and that, probably for only a matter of months. He is still leading a normal life today, at 77 years of age. If you want to try this protocol, you will find all the information you need at the Yahoo health group called Flax Seed Oil 2. Its URL, as of October 2015, is https://groups.yahoo.com/neo/groups/FlaxSeedOil2/infoThe forum for this group explains and discusses the original protocol free of charge. Members occasionally comment on this book.I found Budwig's "The Oil-Protein Diet Cookbook" great for cooking suggestions, but it was written back in 1952, when GMO, pesticides, and the over-use of antibiotics were not a problem in Germany, so I would not take this book as my main guide in fighting cancer. For example, some recipes call for using "condensed milk," which in the US, at least, contains sugar, a no-no. It may be that to Johanna Budwig, "condensed milk" was what we would call "evaporated milk." Some recipes also call for "tomato catsup" (ketchup, in another spelling); well, we can't use the well-known commercial product because it also contains a fair amount of sugar.Another excellent place to go for Budwig-compliant recipes (which are even more in accord with the information on the protocol found in the Yahoo group that I mentioned) is http://budwig-videos.com/ This site is owned by the moderator of the FlaxSeedOil2 group and, unlike the FSO2 site, there is a charge to be able to access all the information. I consider it a very helpful site, especially for people who feel at a loss when it comes to thinking up enough tasty recipes to keep a cancer patient interested in eating. There are also some free recipes in the files at FSO2, which have been sent in by members.By the way, Dr. Budwig made a study of the metabolism of oils and fats, and you may be surprised to find which ones are very unhealthy and how they change for the worse (and become cancer promoters) when heated (an excellent argument for avoiding fried "fast foods").

Valuable information in a poor package.
I became quite interested in Dr. Budwig's work through research. My chemistry skills are pretty old, so I struggled mightily through her lectures embodied in the companion volume "Flas Oil As a True Aid ..." etc. Now, this book is supposed to be a cookbook. The substantial value of the diet is the preparation of the flax-based key ingredients that are then replicated in every ensuing recipe. What this book needed was a decent editor. It is a translation of work that was mainly done 60 years ago! One cannot go to Germany circa 1960 in order to implement the food plan, and so the editors needed to do just a little bit of work to make this relatively painless for implementation. There is virtually NO decent editing work done here, and the references to Dr. Budwig's patented, offered products is not suitable. For instance, one of the key ingredients in these recipes is a "Muesli" carefully designed by Dr. Budwig. (One of her colleagues stated that he wished the beneficiaries of this diet - the users - all had a PhD in chemistry so they could understand the quality of Dr. Budwig's work.)This Muesli ("Linomel") was once branded by Dr. Budwig, apparently, and the book references an 800 number to call. However, when you do call, they tell you that was a "misprint" in the book, and that they sell flax seed oil, and not "Linomel," Dr. Budwig's patented product. The fact is, you will look in vain for what Linomel truly is, and therefore will have to go without it. Some internet sites tell you to simply use 4 teaspoons of freshly-ground flax seeds, and to eat them within 20 minutes. Others simply replace it with flax seed oil and cottage cheese, which, in the book, is called something else. Therefore, when buying this book, be prepared to do a whole lot of head-scratching and web searching to get the basic ingredients down. Also, be prepared to pay a fortune for your flax seed oil, as the cheapest it can be found, even buying bulk, is $12.50/qt. More likely you will be paying around $15 per cup!

Why we should look to nature
If you believe anything, it only seems natural to believe in the natural that is around us. I do not believe in organised religion, politics, and I am no believer in fads and other silliness. What I do believe in is organised corruption, and that is what this book's sub text to my mind challenges. Processed foods are what cause our ailments today, amongst many other self-serving and terrible things. The move to 'slow foods' has been 'slow', but more importantly, the move to balancing our biology with simple and ancient dietary ways seems completely logical, but we refuse to believe in it. This book and the wonderful 'replacements' it offers against our 'modern diet' that has become based on rubbish, is so simple and so imperative. It may even go to providing a solution to the overuse of arable land that is based upon our collective addiction to 'convenience foods'. Budwig's work should be lauded for the simplicity and regard for the foods that are here for us all to enjoy, and that have been here for a very long time, and that are possibly less land intensive to grow. You must buy this book if, like me, you are sicking of taking pills every day for your cholesterol-clogged arteries, your lethargy, your feelings that your heart is about to expire, or that your mind is going somewhere you didn't want it to. Then you might like to investigate what's really going on with food in the modern world and take this small step to countering this swing. I am not an evangelist for Budwig, but recognise her work and a foods alternative that cannot kill you, but can only make you stronger.

Health v price; health wins every time.
A considered investment at £50 plus. It does contain a lot of variations on a theme. Didn't like the curry sauce much. The mayonnaise is fabulous, better than shop bought. It is worth it if you are keen to follow Budwig protocols. Book was new and so far I haven't found any errors.

CURE FOR CANCER
If you need a cure for cancer , providing you follow the instructions exactly and don't give up , you will be cured. Big drug companies don't want you to try this as they will lose revenue. An added bonus is it gives you great energy. I know , I am on the diet.

Oil Protein Diet Cookbook as a GUIDE.
Having read all the Oil Protein Cookbook it is clear that is is intended as a guide to the use of Quark and Flax oil. How much of the diet you intend to use or administer to a sick person is up to you. If you are healthy or a sports person then many of the recipes can be used as healthy replacements for commercial products such a mayonnaise, ice creams, soups and dressings. The advice of what not to eat should not be overlooked as that in itself can stop a deterioration in health. The making of OLEOLOX from garlic, coconut fat, flax oil and an onion makes a viable alternative to butter or margarine although it does not have the same taste. A single batch can last up to 2 weeks. After you have used it for some time going back to quality butter tastes strange so it is just a matter of what you get used to.I have to agree that the translation from the German seems to be a problem but it does not undermine the recipes when used from the health point of view as only a few are complex. You choose how use the variations suggested. Best of luck with the diet.

OIL AND PROTEIN DIET
Having made the decision to start to follow Dr. Johanna Budwig's Budwig Diet all I needed was the Oil and Protein Diet recipe book. You couldn't start this regime without it and I am very pleased with my purchase
