Love, love, love these tomatoes!
I had used this brand of tomatoes for many years but it became very difficult to find Pastene imported "whole" San Marzano tomatoes DOP in our area recently. I searched and searched and I was so pleased to find that Amazon carried them. What I love most about these tomatoes is the rich beautiful red color, the fine texture not hard, and of course the taste which is not acidic. These tomatoes are not watery since they are packed in their own juice. They are a little pricey, but are well worth the money. An added plus was the pull tab opening of the can. The only problem I had was with the packaging/delivery. Three of the 12 cans arrived very badly dented, but I was still able to use them.I Love, Love, Love these tomatoes!

Very Good Authentic From Italy
The product is excellent a little pricy but a great value for a genuine San Marzano Tomato that is certified D.O.P. by the Italian Authorities as being the "Real Deal". Having lived in Italy for over 6 years I always look for and use the best canned tomato I can purchase. These so far have been the best I have found in the U.S.The problem I had with this shipment has nothing to do with the product. The original box the tomatoes come in was damaged (see photo) and thrown in a bigger box which was way to big for the original box. Some paper was stuffed in which did nothing to protect the cans resulting in all but one can being dented. Whoever works filling orders should know not to send a box that is damaged out to the customer. These cans run over $5 each and the people working for Amazon need to use more care when filling orders.

Damaged cans
I ordered a case of these tomatoes. The box I received was intact, but 11 of the 12 cans were dented; some severely. I do not trust using dented cans as they can be contaminated. I did receive a refund, but I would be very hesitant to order these again.

Best Tomatoes EVER!
I've been on a quest for years to find the very best canned tomatoes. After much research online, I learned that the reason even the best brands of Marzano tomatoes often fall short when purchased in the US is due to the fact that they pack them in puree for export, rather than tomato juice--apparently due to a lower tariff on puree than on juice. Unfortunately, packing in puree significantly affects the taste of the tomatoes, giving them a stewed, slightly metallic taste and dampening the bright, fresh flavors you want. The reason is that puree is made from low-quality tomatoes that are cooked and pulverized, v. juice, which is squeezed fromThis was the only kosher brand I was able to find that is packed in juice, and is absolutely fantastic--far better than the well-known brands (Cento, etc.). It is worth every penny. To make the best pizza/pasta/all purpose tomato sauce, just dump the can into a large bowl, break down the tomatoes with your fingers (latex gloves are useful for this), and add a generous pinch of dried oregano and a bit of red pepper flakes. Then pour into an airtight container and refrigerate for up to 10 days or so. Then when you use it, you can add various herbs and seasonings that are appropriate for the particular dish. For pizza, use the sauce as is, allowing the bright tomato flavor to shine, rather than concealing it with herbs/spices. For pasta, I'll heat up some EVOO and throw in some minced garlic before adding the tomatoes and letting it simmer on low heat for a few minutes until it reaches the desired consistency.

Very good tomatoes, but not great. Cans were crushed
My go-to canned tomatoes are Bianco/Dinapoli, but the Pastene DOP tomatoes were available for about half the B/D price for a case of 12, so I thought I'd give them a try. Unfortunately, out of the 12 cans in the case, not a single one was in perfect shape on arrival. A couple had minor dents at the top, but most were seriously deformed, as if the box had been dropped on a concrete floor from several feet up. Nevertheless, the integrity/seals of all of the cans appear to have been maintained. When I opened one of the badly damaged cans to make a classic marinara sauce I've prepared many times before, it became clear the the contents were under pressure: sauce squirted out of the can as soon as the can opener pierced the lid. This is almost certainly probably because the crushed can had less volume than it did it its uncrushed state. My first observation is that the Pastene tomatoes were very mushy right out of the can. I was able to completely crush them by hand with just a couple of squeezes. By comparison, the B/D tomatoes are always very firm and it takes a couple of minutes to crush them by hand. The sauce I make is very simple - just tomatoes, extra virgin olive oil, fresh garlic, fresh basil, sea salt, and red pepper flakes, so the tomatoes are the star of the show. WIth the Pastene tomatoes, the sauce was very good. By comparison, the sauce made with B/D tomatoes is consistently great. My conclusion is that - for the price - the Pastene tomatoes are worth it. But if you demand the absolute best in taste, go with B/D tomatoes or another brand you know is outstanding.

Love these tomatoes but
These are the best Tasting D.O.P tomatoes on the market. The only problem is Amazon can’t deliver any edible cans. Two shipments and both times all cans are damaged beyond consumption. I would not order from Amazon for this reason. 5 stars for the product 3 stars for the delivery.
