Nostolgic Adventure at it best.
First read this novella length story some 40 years ago as a child and picked up the audio book and kindle combo package last year. I already knew the story so it waited low in my que of things to read until yesterday. It only takes about five hours to listen through the audiobook, or even less to read soI finished it in one day. It is a fine adventure story of the sort that appeal especially to boys and young men, with great feats of daring do interspersed with set backs complicating the like of our protagonist. David, our self declared Emperor of Pellucider Is the same main character from the first book (At The Earth's Core) and you should definitely read the books in story order unless you are familiar with the setting and characters.

A Great Adventure Story As Innes Returns To The Inner Earth World
One of the marks of a great writer is that he can take an unbelievable situation and make it sound true and accurate and believable. “Pellucidar”is book two of the seven-volume Pellucidar series by Burroughs, which tells the story of the adventures in a hollow-earth world where intelligent reptiles were the dominant species and humans were stuck in stone age civilization. One of the remarkable things Burroughs created in this hollow-world are the fact that, without sunrise or sunset, there is simply an eternal mid-day sun and thus no real conception of time. Although he was not the first one to ever postulate the existence of an inner-earth world, no one either before or since has done it half as well. Above all, this book, like the others in this terrific series, is a wonderful adventure story of fighting and chivalry. In the first book in the series (“At the Earth’s Core”), Innes and Perry tunneled into this inner-world in a mighty metal prospector, not having any idea that it ever existed. At the end of the first book, Innes returns to the outer crust to gather arms, tools, and books so that he and Perry can advance human civilization in the inner world and take on the Mahar (reptile) empire. This second book of the series details Innes return to the inner world and his adventures there and how with his tools, weapons, and technological know-how brought back from the outer world, he leads a federation of stone age kingdoms in battle against the Mahars, bringing to bear weapons that no one in the inner world could ever have dreamed of.It is truly a great story and, once you expect the conceit that there is an inner world with an inner sun and intelligent creatures there of many kinds, you will enjoy this book immensely. It is simply a great adventure story and quite enjoyable to read.

ERB Classic
Sitting down with one of these "old " ERB books is like spending an afternoon with an old friend. This is one of the books that I read as a pre-teen, I am now in my seventies. I enjoyed them then, and they are still just as enjoyable, if you keep in mind the time and world in which they were written. There is a quality in the writing that might escape some readers. ERB, through his characters, displays a self deprecating sense of self assurrance. His characters often say things like," I was not" the best of this or that, but I put every ounce of skill or training or whatever it took to meet the situation at hand to accomplish a task. His characters establish friendships and are loyal to friends and family to the point of self denial and loss of self satisfaction, qualities which might not be understood these days.I also like the book just for it's sense of escape and adventure.

2nd in the Pellucidar series and still good.
This is one of Burroughs' book in the Pellucidar series. The series involves the exploration of a land mass formed when the earth cooled. This formed a shell as Earth's center core continued to shrink and separated from the shell. We live on the outside. Other people live on the inner surface of the shell. That land area is Pellucidar. There are seven books, I believe. in the series. Go to Australia's Gutenberg to get them all. They all form a continuing flow as the current book takes up some unresolved condition in a previous book. And, then leaves something for the next book to hook onto.Does this Burroughs fella know how to keep a pot boiling and then bring 'em back for the next one? You bet!

One of the classics of pulp fantasy
This is a classic of pulp fantasy and that is what you get when you buy it. It is not the finest writing and the story is pretty much the same as what you will find in nearly any of the ERB stories like this (Barsoom, Tarzan, etc.) So if you like that kind of story, you will like this book.I read this because it was a classic and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Just remember that it was written in a different time and place and that the social attitudes (especially those towards women) are the product of their time. On the whole this was a fun (and quick) read. If you liked other books by Burroughs you will like this one and its sequels.

His stories were great for me as a kid and I bought them ...
For the time, Burroughs wrote well. His stories were great for me as a kid and I bought them now for my grandkids. Much of the language and "atmosphere" is out-dated now, but the concepts and fantasy worlds are great.

Lost on Pellucidar
This is the sequel to At the Earth's Core. That book ended with the hero, David Innes, back on the surface world and separated from his mate, Dian the Beautiful. In this book, he returns to Pellucidar to get her back. This is a formula in many Edgar Rice Burroughs books; the hero becomes separated from his lady love, and has a series of adventures until he is reunited with her. It may be a formula, but it's a successful one. Sure, the plots may be similar, but there are always different strange, exotic worlds to encounter. There was a reason ERB was the most popular pulp writer of his time. Fans of pulp fiction will enjoy this book.

This is for Edgar Rice Burroughs Fans!
I own over 90% of Edgar Rice Burroughs' books and still looking for the rest. The very first book that I purchased and read over a dozen times is A Princess of Mars (The Mars Series), then I have all the Tarzan Series which includes one of the Pellucidar series. So I had to find the Pellucidar books and got them all except the first book. Then I had to find all of the other books that didn't belong in any type of series, just so I had them. So after more then 40 years I think I may have the complete collection.

Classic
I have virtually all Edgar Rice Burroughs novels in paperback or hardback including this one which I have now added to my kindle for convenience. A master story teller, albeit a little dated by today's standards, for someone like me who has enjoyed reading and rereading his novels for well over 50 years, it is like meeting up once more with an old and valued friend.

Great writer
If you enjoy adventure you'll enjoy this - it's great and the writers imagination is just fantastic! Fabulously written! (Not as good as his Barsoom series though).
