Woodstock: The Director's Cut [1969] [DVD]

The Blossoming Of The Flower Children
Woodstock and Live Aid are possibly the 2 most famous concerts ever. This is a longer version of the released film which already clocked in at nearly 3 hours this version adds another 45 minutes ! The film is very much a product of its time with the flower children of the sixties at their zenith so there are plenty of drugs [ announcements from the stage about the quality of the brown acid] and also plenty of nudity, the crowd was not afraid to remove their clothing. The film does give hints of the other side of the coin with interviews with the locals some are tolerant, some are making money but others are annoyed by this intrusion on their quiet country life. The start of the film shows the building of the stage and the massive scaffolding speaker towers a danger to the crowd during a storm, health and safety is somewhat ignored with workers holding on to things being lifted by giant cranes. There are also interviews with the organisers who claim that money is not important [ they made a fortune] and ride around on motorbikes. But of course what makes the film are the musicians and the music. Vietnam is very much the topic of the day particularly evident in the performances of Joan Baez [whose husband was jailed for protesting] and Country Joe Macdonald with Feel Like I'm Fixin' To Die Rag. The music is magnificent with the wonderful harmonies of Crosby, Stills and Nash, The Who in glorious though pissed off form, Joe Cocker with his wonderfully demented performance of With A Little Help From My Friends then there are the bands that made their names at the concert Santana with their Latin influenced rock and Sly and The Family Stone with the magnificent hippie funk of Higher. The film ends with 2 artists that were to die within a year of the concert firstly Janis Joplin [who doesn't appear in the original film] with a typically intense performance and Jimi Hendrix with the iconic Voodoo Child, Star Spangled Banner, Purple Haze medley and some guitar noodling over film of the attempted clear up. Lastly a word about the way the film was shot it uses split screen a lot so it can seem that part of the screen has gone blank it hasn't a different view will be shown on the other half. So an iconic film of a classic concert the apex of the hippie world soon to come crashing down to earth at Altamont but that is another film!!1

Greatest music festival ever
I bought this as I saw the film ages ago, but didn't remember there being so many add ons with people being interviewed. All worth it to see Jimi Hendrix still at the end of the DVD and this time all of his playing is shown.Don't recall seeing Janis Joplin last time either, plus the Classic Country Joe MacDonald, Give me an F.Loved the second number by Jefferson Airplane with Nicky Hopkins on piano, very good blues song.Basically summed up by one of the spokes people, 'Three Days of Love and Music and nothing but Love and Music!'Well worth buying good nostalgia kick.

Only 40 years ago?
Surely this was filmed 100 years ago? It was certainly another world. The innocence and kindheartedness of nearly all the people in the film is what strikes this cynic the most. The promoters who accept they are going to "take a big bath" when they realise they have to take down the fences and make it a free concert for safety reasons. The landowner who can't believe the amount of people who have come to his farmThe locals (most of them anyway) cheerfully giving food and water to the kids and commenting about how respectful they areThe kids going to a music festival but for some reason expecting and getting so much more - and then queuing to phone home and tell the parents they're okay! The performers who knew something special was happening and did their bit to make history. At more than 3 hours the film could have seemed too long but it doesn't as the performances and interviews with concert-goers mix perfectly. There are few interviews with the performers as the director recognises it was really all about the kids.It would be interesting to see present day interviews with people in the film to see their current day view on what happened at Woodstock but in the meantime we can only enjoy this living piece of history.

Classic but drags in bits
It's a classic, beautifully shot documentary, very artfully edited to give a 360 view of the festival from the crowds to the local farmers and town dwellers, with lots of interesting interviews. Where it drags a little is in the selection of music some of which has aged terribly (Jefferson airplane in particular are baggy and pretty bad) some of these cuts run 10 minutes when 2 would have sufficed, but it gives a great sense of the feeling and atmosphere of this pioneering festival.

Inspirational!
If you love the Sixties scene then you’re going to love this! I ordered on Prime Video (already have on VHS & DVD) - available immediately with excellent sound and picture quality considering the limitations of the original source. The Directors Cut has more on it than the original VHS (which is good, of course) but be warned - it does seem disjointed and seems to meander more than the original. I’d prefer it if this option gave buyers the original film with other performances as extras, rather than splicing it all together.Of the performances - The Who were amazing even if Hendrix grabs the headlines with Star Spangled Banner. Also watch out for Sly Stone, Santana and Crosby Stills & Nash.I first watched Woodstock 30 years ago as a teenager and found it inspirational. I now think it should be viewed as an important part of our social history. I hope you enjoy watching it as much as I have done!
