Amy Carmichael: Beauty for Ashes - A Biography

Interesting but I think next time I’ll just get an autobiography, if Amy wrote one of course. I’ve realised I prefer reading the story from the protagonist’s perspective.

Have read so many books by and about Amy Carmichael, but this author commented helpfully on an aspect of her life that was a bit mysterious to me, Amy's understanding of God's guidance.

In his book, Amy Carmichael: Beauty for Ashes, Iain Murray tells the inspiring story of the young woman who went to the mission field and never came home. Amy Carmichael felt the call of God on her life at an early age and originally thought she was headed for China. But Amy was redirected to India to serve children of the lowest caste, many of whom were destined for a life of slavery. This volume is a wonderful synopsis of Carmichael’s life, work, and her relationships with God and the children she loved. Beauty for Ashes is well-written and well-researched, as one would expect from Iain Murray. It is a compact and concise narrative and serves as an excellent survey. Every chapter begins with a bit of Carmichael’s poetry, which gives the book a magnificent tone. There are a couple of chapters at the end that address the historical and theological events of Carmichael’s day that feel a bit out of place to this reader. However, it is an exceptional read and simply isn’t long enough. I highly recommend Beauty for Ashes to those wanting to acquaint themselves with Amy Carmichael and her inspirational life.

I never really read the "heavier" books about Amy Carmichael, so this was an excellent introduction to Amy and how God used her to touch so many lives. Iain Murray is so good at getting right to the point and making the reading enjoyable and smooth. I read the entire book in a short time and then shared it with others. I highly recommend it. She stood up for what was right in the ministry God gave her in India even if other Christians back in England didn't understand. She was a woman of courage, passion, compassion and commitment. Her life at the end was most interesting to me.

I have already read about Amy Carmichael, but this book gave me more information about this wonderful worker for Christ.

What a life . . . given over to God. A woman who worked diligently, persevered in sorrow and pain, and lived close to our dear Lord Jesus. Now read Elisabeth Elliot's A Chance to Die. More on courage, long-suffering, and sublime joy in Christ.
