Great book
If you have never built a patio and are going to take it on yourself you will save thousands of dollars. This book is great for ideas showing you all of your options. The how to is not bad but I got clearer how to info from other sources. I recommend this book.

Mediocre DYI book.
Typical B&D book with not well designed examples. Very good details, photos and materials lists for the DYI. But, for a book to be useful it should have been in a spiral or similar binder to be able to lay it open. The binding is very stiff and the heavy, large size makes it even difficult to read at a desk or in your lap.

Good but a lot of repetition and I think it ...
Good but a lot of repetition and I think it is a little out dated; not all pavers need mortar anymore.

Great ideas and lots of information.
This is a great book for anyone looking to build a patio in their garden. There are lots of different ideas from recycled plastic pavers to tiled concrete slabs and although the book is called the Complete Guide to Patios there are other associated projects such as walls and walkways. The beginning of the book discusses the different types of patios, such as those designed to be more sheltered or those used for entertaining/dining and also provides details on different materials, what is best for some gardens and worse for others. It is an American book so some of the points such as zoning laws and building codes may not be relevant but tips such as how to produce a plan and some other practical considerations are worth noting. Each project gives you step by step instructions, with accompanying photographs, which are easy and clear to understand. There is also a list of the tools and materials you will need at the start of the project and the text includes other suggestions or options for how you can change it or get an alternative look. Some of the content might be more useful for beginners, but experienced DIY enthusiasts may still get ideas for new projects or approaches. Beginners could benefit from instructions such as how to cut stone with a circular saw or even how to create a wheelbarrow path. Some of this will be common sense but it is a complete guide so it is good to have it included. We have used several ideas including the flagstone paving and concrete curb edging and found the book really informative and easy to use. These were ideas that we had not considered previously but have really changed how the garden looks. The next step is a firepit! I would never have considered such a project previously but it looks relatively simple and each step is detailed.I am really impressed with this book and I would recommend it to anyone. I think beginners or those without much DIY experience will really benefit from this book and their gardens will look fantastic.
