The 101 Dalmatians

Good read
I'll start by saying that I grew up with the Disney movie, which I love very much. I had just recently purchased a VHS tape of the movie and watched it, only to be reminded that it was based on a novel (during the credits). So finally I went online and decided to buy it.The book is very different from the movie, much more involved with the dogs' world than the humans', which I liked. It seems Disney left many characters out of the movie, and changed most of the ones they kept. For example, Perdita is a lost, liver-spotted dalmatian that "Mrs. Dearly" finds alongside the road, who helps foster the 15 puppies birthed by "Missis", who is Pongo's actual wife. Perdita later finds her lost puppies at Hell Hall and is reunited with them, along with her husband who is taken away after they are "married". Other left out characters include an old Spaniel, a Staffordshire Terrier, Cruella's Persian cat, and a show dog.Cruella DeVil's husband, who is a furrier (one who makes animal skin coats) is never mentioned. "Saul and Jasper" in the book are replaced with "Horace and Jasper", and there are two nannies (Nanny Butler and Nanny Cook) instead of one.I found two typos in the book (my copy, at least), one is where "that" is misspelled "tht" and a stray parenthesis mark. This book has a certain charm and a clever way of portraying the way dogs think and act. The emotions are strong and well-portrayed in each character, and you definitely get a feeling to how they are coping with situations in the story. The one I felt was the strongest was Missis having to deal with life outside a warm cozy fire and all the comforts of home as they search for their children.Overall, I like the story very much, and I'll probably re-read it over and over as time goes on.

DIsney's 101 Dalmations has little resemblance to the original.
As with many classic works that Disney "recreated" -- this is a prime example of why I usually don't like the movies. There is so much charm, warmth and character development that Disney missed. Or eliminated. The stories ofPongo and Missis (his wife in the book) met; Perdita's story; the backstory of Cruella and her husband. The charmof the search for the puppies .... so many, many ways a wonderful and touching story was turned into anotherDisney "romp" full of chase scenes and vaudeville touches. It saddens me that books like this and others have been popularized by movies and people think they "know" thebook. They don't.Disney is fine in many ways, but books like this one, The Wind in the Willows, and the Pooh books should be off limitsfor movie makers.

Better than the Movie
If you have never read the book that created the movie buy it right now and read it. 101 Dalmations is my favorite Disney movie and this book is better (as most books are) You're missing out on so, So, SO MUCH! Theres not even 99 puppies *gasp* if you dont read this book you will never know who Saul is, or about Mr. DeVil, or Cadpig or who Perdita really is. Once you start each turn of the page brings a new story you've never heard. All time favorite book EVER, reminiscing about my childhood.

Seriously, get this if your kid loves Disney Dalmatian stuff
This is a really great book. Timeless and a perfect compliment to the Disney stuff that was based on this book. There are so many differences in this original, but they are fun to resolve if you are a fan of the later stuff, as they either provide depth of story, or changes that make it much more interesting and fun from the Dalmatian point of view.

Make sure you get the right illustrations!
First off, allow me to assure you that this book is 100% better than the animated classic, and 500% better than the dreadful live version movie. The book has far more depth, way more characters, and a lot more story. It's utterly charming.I've owned and read this book since I was a child, and knew it would be a perfect gift for my niece, who loves animals. However, when I ordered her copy, I was dismayed to find that her edition did not have the same illustrations as mine! The original line drawings by Janet and Anne Grahame-Johnstone are an integral part of the story; definitely do what you can to make sure your edition has them.I truly adore this book and can't recommend it highly enough.

The Dalmations fit the bill!
I convene a church book group and we read a classic each year. The original novel of The 101 Dalmatians fit the bill and we were able to purchase copies at a reasonable price in an excellent edition. The story is well known to many of us, thanks to the Disney film and other products that have been released since the book was first published in the 1950's. But the novel itself is very worth reading! This is a story that adults, as well as children, will enjoy. I recommend it with five stars!

A story for dog lovers of all ages
Read this years ago as a child. Now I was excited to buy it for my granddaughter. Like many classics, the book has a charm that even the best movie adaption can't match. It's a wonderful read aloud treat, or perfect escape reading. Sometimes when you revisit a childhood favorite, the magic just isn't the same, but 101 Dalmations is just as enchanting at 55 as it was at 12.

Fun, easy read. Great for youngsters.
Wonderful book...so much better that the movie! I buy this for the youngsters in my life. They all love it I love it too and reread it when I want to smile and feel good. I recommend this book for everyone. Dodie Smith is an excellent writer for girls - I also recommend her book, "I Capture the Castle."
