Awesome rendition - worth every dime
UPDATE 11/28/2011 - Since my review of the cassette version of "James Earl Jones Reads the Bible" below, I have also purchased the complete KJV Bible on CD with narration of the Old Testament by Alexander Scourby and narration of New Testament by James Earl Jones. The CD version by Jones is exactly the same as the cassette version. I still listen to and enjoy all the CDs on a regular basis.----------I really enjoy the entire "James Earl Jones Reads the Bible," although it consists of the New Testament only. The readings never grow old or fail to bring a sense of peace and calmness into our home. While the the music may be "synthesized" (?), it is barely audible and fades soothingly into the background. The music and Jones' Shakespearean voice blend well as he slowly articulates each word, his voice subdued and detached-like. He doesn't attempt to project himself into the reading but lets the reading speak for itself. I sometimes wonder if the reading of God's sacred Word had as profound an effect on Mr. Jones as it does me whenever I listen to him read it, which is often. In my opinion, there is no voice on earth as mesmerizing and beautiful as his. I wish he would hurry up and do a rendering of the books of Psalms and Proverbs as well.

James Earl Jones Reads The Bible
I am an Elderly Lady, disabled and under the care of Hospice. It has become impossible for me to read the Bible, so I reviewed THE BIBLE on CD offered on Amazon. There are different "readers"so the only question was: what voice do I wish to listen too, reading the most read book in the world. The moment I saw James Earl Jones...("Luke..I am your father") I knew in a HEARTBEAT.. that was the voice I wanted to hear. I am. not disappointed in my decision. My only regret is not having bought this CDset years ago, for my whole family to enjoy. even my Grandkids love listening to theDvds. He brings The Bible to life. It comes in a nice box with each

A great way to get religion.
I have to be honest - James Earl Jones has read more Bible to me than I ever read on my own. And you can listen to the Bible while you're multi-tasking. James Earl Jones has a fantastic voice and there are no extraneous choirs or music in the background. The only negative I can add has already been pointed out by other reviewers. This collection covers the New Testament only. I was kind of hoping to get the Old Testament too but, based on what's out there now, I can wait until James Earls Jones reads the Old Testament

Wow!
I listen to it on my hour commute to work and it is incredible. Makes me want to farther into the Bible. I am on Mathew right now and I have learned so much!

Background Track Distracting
Listening to James Earl Jones read the New Testament is not be missed. However, this particular version has background music which is sort of new agey and irritates me a lot. It's the same synthesizer music played over and over and has no connection to the words, so it gets loud where the passages he's reading are soft and vice versa. If you want to hear James Earl Jones read the bible (which I highly recommend), I'd get The Complete Audio Holy Bible: King James Version version, where the Old Testament is read by Jon Sherberg and the same James Earl Jones New Testament is included without the background track. I will add, though, that I gave this version (the one with the background track) to my mother and she loves it. She not only doesn't mind the background music, she finds it soothing. So it's definitely a matter of taste. As for the reading itself, though Mr. Jones is not as compelling as I might have wished and it's obvious that he's merely reading through much of it rather than expressing the meaning of the words, it's still wonderful to listen to. His voice is, as always, deep and soothing and the words themselves make up for any lack in the delivery. An excellent version which is acted rather than simply spoken with multiple people reading the different characters and interesting background sound effects is The Word of Promise: New Testament Audio Bible . There is also a The Word of Promise: Complete Audio Bible , but I've only purchased the new testament version.I like both versions of audio bibles. The KJV version with Sherberg and Jones is wonderful for soothing background when you're concentrating on something else, like doing the dishes or cooking. The Word of Promise is wonderful when you want something that actually captures and holds your attention for a period of time, like when you're driving. I listen to the Word of Promise on the bus in the mornings and it's a wonderful way to wake up and start the day. Both versions have value, you just have to decide what you want.

A Must!
Great voice, of course. As a Christian, it hits on verses that I had hidden in my heart many years ago from the King James Version and makes me smile as I remember. Also, great for "Baby" Christians, as well as for a non-Christian to introduce the Bible in private as an unobtrusive witnessing tool. So glad I bought the audio book!

lovely rich voice
Deep bass voice reads the NT slowly and clearly. I have it on in the car, when cooking in the kitchen and when relaxing. The living word read in such a relaxing way. Super!

I find your lack of faith disturbing.
