Ryzen hex core and NVMe SSD remove your typical bottlenecks
I got this for my mother to replace a 10 year old Asus laptop she had been using. If there had been a 16GB model available here at the time I would have gone for that she does some photo/video editing, but it can be upgraded easily enough I suppose. That's not really a ding against this model in general though, since I'm sure there are 16GB versions available.Over all this laptop is great. It's sleek, the touch screen is responsive and it folds easily. The fingerprint reader seems reliable and unlocks the system fast. The camera is quite good for a laptop in this price range. The keyboard was easier to type on than expected, considering it has a 10-key off to the side. The speakers are above average for the form factor, but not something I'd listen to music on for extended periods. Battery life seemed fine in the small amount I tested it.For the cons, it does come with a few things installed you may not want, like McAfee privacy and antivirus stuff. I didn't have to spend too long removing bloatware, but there was a little. I'm not a huge fan of the USB port on the left side. It sort of "folds open" like a lot of laptop ethernet ports you see on thinner designs. The screen is only 1080p, but let's be real that's not really a con at this price range or for anyone that won't really utilize higher resolution because of eyesight issues. Aside from that there's not much to change. I'd love another USB port, but after using this for a day while setting it up, I'd be happy to have one for myself. If you're planning to use this as a tablet, maybe rethink that. At 4lbs+ it's still too beefy to carry around for that kind of task.As the headline alludes, performance is great in general. The NVMe drive is a nice step up from even your normal SSD, and having 6 cores that can boost up to 4GHz for some better single threaded performance is nice for a little laptop in this price range. If you're a light to moderate user just needing to do web surfing, email, excel, youtube and maybe some light photo editing, this model with 8GB of RAM is going to work really well for you.

Update on December 24 - after 3 months of use.
ZOOM problems....Have the computer for a month and the second day I logged in to ZOOM I had issues...microphone / speaker - audio issues and then it's frozen with an audible 'flat line' sound. I've gone the HP chat community and it seems like a common issue with this model so I thought I'd leave a review letting future potential buyers know about this issue.Other than that - it's been everything that I expected - a really nice machine that runs everything else perfectly. I really enjoy the keyboard and the screen is incredible! The touchscreen is responsive and I'm totally satisfied with everything but it's interaction with ZOOM - it causes a bit of anxiety when your at a meeting and you never know if your microphone or speaker will stop working - for that I give it 4 stars instead of 5.I'm not a 'fixer' of computers - going to look into the BIOS and find drivers and updates - so I haven't tried to fix it myself - some on the HP chat say it's AMD's fault, some say HP, some say Microsoft...I'm not going to venture any guesses as to 'who's to blame' I'd just like to work smoothly, like my 8 year old Dell and give it 5 stars.Update (December 24, 2020) - Over the past two weeks I've been using ZOOM pretty much everyday without any problems. Looks like the audio issues on ZOOM have been addressed and fixed. That's the only complaint I've had as the audio worked on every other site/app/streaming service. I'm moving my rating up to 5 stars. Not sure who to thank for the fix, I'll start with HP - congrats on addressing and fixing the audio issue.

Just what I needed.
I sweat the decision to buy for several weeks before I landed on this machine as a good compromise. I don't need a luxury liner of a laptop but I need something better than the bargain offerings. I'm happy with the processing power and so far I'm glad I took a friend's recommendation to look into Ryzen. I do a lot of audio work and having a slim laptop to take with me to gigs that can handle the workload was key. The fact that I can fold it up into tablet mode and prop it up somewhere in a crowded production environment is a plus although for nearly everything else I do the touch capability is just frosting and not something I use all the time. Battery life seems good although I haven't had a chance to really put it through its paces on a show yet.The screen is terrific and a joy to watch movies on. I don't have much to say about the graphics power as I don't do any gaming so I can't speak to FPS in Fortmine. The keyboard is pleasant to type on although probably not as nice as a gaming laptop or MacBook. Thekeyboard backlight only has high, low, and off which leaves a little to be desired but wasn't a deal breaker for me. I like that two of the F-keys are camera shutter and mic mute. The body is so thin that the left USB port has a little expansion door that slides open when you plug in. Seems nice but I'll have to see how long they last against me fumbling to plug in hard drives in the dark. The trackpad is one of the better ones I've encountered recently. A light touch gets you around but it's good at rejecting touches while typing. The built in sound is about what you'd expect for a laptop. It's fine for watching YouTube but when I watch movies I always reach for headphones or a Bluetooth speaker.I bought the model with only 8GB of RAM and I will likely upgrade at some point. For most daily usage it's fine but when crunching through heavy audio projects I think I'll want a bit more. I haven't looked into cracking the case yet so I don't know how difficult that is. I'm used to digging around inside of expensive stuff but if you're not, you should probably consider going for more memory at the outset if you think you'll need it.EDIT: Just upgraded from 2x4 GB to 2x16 RAM. The case was fairly easy to open as was the shielding over the memory. I open stuff all the time and have a large set of tools for it so your mileage may vary. If you do upgrade don't skimp on the frequency. 3200 MHz is what comes in the box so keep that in mind when ordering upgrades.
