The second one was great
The first one I got was already opened, had a password on the device, I factory defaulted it but it would not show a MAC address — so if you get one with all zeros as a Mac do yourself a favor and return it. This one had internal physical issue with one of the hdd connections too. I opened a ticket with Amcrest but it was to very little avail other than they wanted to RMA a brand new device so I returned it to Amazon and a new one was shipped. The new one worked perfectly. The learning curve for AI is this device only allows one camera as AI. Still learning how to implement ai as a camera with this device but I don’t think it can handle much video traffic complexities as a very expensive custom made NVR would — hence the price.

Great AI NVR, POE ports not included but easy to couple with POE switch, tested on 5/8 cameras
I ordered the Amcrest 4K NV4216-EI 16CH AI NVR, Smart NVR, Facial Recognition, Face Detection & Vehicle & Human Intruder Detection - Supports 2 x 16TB Hard Drive's (Not Included) (No PoE Ports Included). This was the first time I bought an NVR without POE ports, so I also purchased an AMCREST POE adapter, Amcrest 9-Port POE+ Power Over Ethernet POE Switch with Metal Housing, 8-Ports POE+ 802.3at 96w (AMPS9E8P-AT-96).The packaging of the POE adapter and NVR were simple to open, and I would describe the instructions provided in the paperwork as minimal. I have setup NVRs and POE cameras in the past, so it didn’t take me too long setup the new NVR and POE adapter. I think the clarity of the figure for the POE adapter could have been better; there are only so many ways one can connect a camera, POE adapter, NVR, and router, and I was able to connect them based on my interpretation of the small manual. I was initially hesitant to buy an NVR without the POE switches included, but it really was very easy to add in the POE adapter. Instead of plugging cameras directly into the NVR, the cameras went directly the POE adapter, and then the POE adapter was connected via ethernet cable to the router.A few days after my purchase, when I knew I had a few hours, I installed a new hard disc, and reused the old disc from my previous NVR. For people who install hard drives every day, the install of the hard drives very easily, but it took me a few seconds to realize that I should put two screws in the hard drive first, and then slide them into the wide-to-narrow NVR slots. I failed initially, trying to hold the drives in the right position and put the screws in from underneath! A hint here might help those without installation savvy. When you first startup the NVR it has a default password, and you can set a new password at startup. It also has the option of drawing a pattern at startup. The pattern is much easier way to access menu options than typing in the password with your mouse, but probably less secure.I have purchased AI-enabled cameras from Amcrest in the past few years, mostly to try out the new features, not necessarily because I need them. I think the AI features have the potential to save you time when reviewing recorded data, or give you real-time alarms for events that you should be aware of. I still am not skilled enough to setup my cameras with the right setting to give me warnings when they are actually significant. In the past, to use AI features I had to connect the cameras directly to my router, and use AI features in Amcrest cloud software product. There are also subscriptions for AI recording, which I tried over one extended vacation, to have some smart warnings available to me on my trip. The AI cameras were able to tell between humans, animals, and vehicles, and that can be useful criteria for when detected movement is worth getting a notice, or recording an event. The AI feature that I explored with the Amcrest AI NVR in this testing period was facial detection and recognition. It is possible to create a local database of faces and people and the NVR can detect and identify those faces. Without reading any manuals it was easy enough to put some facial images on thumb drive, saved in jpg format, and upload them to the database. I don’t recall the limit, but I think it supports hundreds of ID’s and photos. There are options for batch uploading the database but I didn’t use these. I could imagine it could be useful to set a camera to notice if someone was there who was not on the “approved” list. I was able to upload and image of myself to the database and the system was able to detect me. I was able to review these detections from the AI events menu. One limitation of this NVR is that if you are using the AI features of the NVR, you can only use it on one camera at a time. If you are want to use the NVR AI feature on several cameras, you need to select AI feature by the device and you can enable AI events from several cameras at once. Since I have three AI cameras, I was able to record Intelligent Video System (IVS) events from three cameras at once. This is similar to motion detection, but also adds some discrimination between humans and vehiclesI look forward to eventually getting a license plate reading camera, as this feature is supported on this NVR. It would be useful to have a log of what vehicles are entering and leaving my neighborhood if this was done automatically. This could help with crime prevention, or after a crime to look for unusual traffic. There are some commercial companies, like Flock Safety, that will monitor these things for you, or for your community. With a few Amcrest cameras you might be able to do this yourself? The Amcrest AI NVR and POE adapter have worked great over the last two + weeks. The option for two hard drives, and up to 16TB of storage allows for several weeks of recording with my current camera count and recording resolution. The NVR is rated to work at 180 Mbps with AI features enabled. My system would be limited by the POE adapter, which was only rated for 100 Mbps. I didn’t notice much lag when using the NVR menus, and reviewing recorded data. If the POE data rate becomes a concern, Amcrest offers a slightly higher priced model with 1000 Mbps.I also explored the Amcrest website to see if I could get more information about how to use the AI features. I used the general search window and quickly pulled up a few articles for how to implement AI features. These were helpful. I know there is also a detailed manual available for the NVR. It might be nice if there was a QR code placed with the NVR itself that I could find the correct manual online without having to look it up.One feature that might be nice would be some documentation for product use inside the NVR itself. It might be nice to have a guide as to what cameras, and what setup schemes are optimal for the NVR to maximize its utility. As a non-professional when it comes to security, it would be nice if there was an Amcrest learning platform to suggest some best practices, and maybe even some different scenarios with the NVR fully setup with settings and cameras to show the right way to do things.

Constantly Disconnects, No Stability
I had high hopes for the Amcrest 4K NV4216-EI 16CH AI NVR, but unfortunately, I had to return it. I connected about 10 cameras, and it would not stay connected—constantly disconnecting and reconnecting, making it completely unreliable.I have 1GB high-speed internet, so connection speed wasn’t the issue. Despite troubleshooting, there was no stability, and it failed to provide the consistency I needed. Disappointed and would not recommend.

Great features and excellent value
This is the fourth NVR I have purchased and they are all additions for various premises. The oldest one in operation is 8 years old. I have not had any issues with any of them, not even hard drive replacements using WD surveillance drives. The latest unit has fantastic functionality a very nice updated UI software with AI features to support the latest cameras by Amcrest. The ease and speed of setup is excellent. Amcrest has moved away from using onboard power supplies and is now using an external power adapter this make the weight and size of the units smaller.

Good but could be better
Installed a few of these between work amd home. They work great in a home set up and a a basic business set up. Most of our building managers it works just fine but we also have a few that want to playback all 16 cameras at once which it cannot handle where our 1 5 yr old old honeywell system does it without an issue . As far ancrest view pro pc version its a slow poorly coded app. They just released a amcrest view 2 for android that is faster and has a better user experiance than there original app hopefully they give us reworked and more optimized amcrest view pc app soon
