Anubis is certainly the best known of the Egyptian gods. Most often depicted with a black-colored dog's head that was a sign of rebirth and hope among the Egyptians
Anubis was a god "psychopomp", that is to say one of the gods who accompanied the dead to their ultimate destination: the kingdom of the dead. This made him a reassuring god for the Egyptians who placed more importance on the future life in the beyond of Osiris than on their earthly life. He was the protective god of the underworld which he defended against any attack of the dark forces.
He was also the god of the embalmers, in fact he presided over the rites of embalming because his essential function was to reconstitute the body of the deceased (as he did for Osiris), as such he was responsible for Mummification.
