German Grammar Drills (German Edition)

Unbelievably useful!
This is a great book. Finally I have clear and simple explanations of the complex machinery of German grammar and some exercises that are really helping me to get to grips with it. Probably not for beginners, but from intermediate level.Wish it were a bit smaller - easier for use on my commute (but then, there'd be less in it). Wish (in contradiction of previous wish) that there were even more exercises. If it delivered on these two things, I'd be even more effusive!!!!!

I have almost the entire Practice Makes Perfect grammar series in French and German
I have almost the entire Practice Makes Perfect grammar series in French and German, and I certainly don't regret what I have bought so far. The "German Grammar Drills" and "The German Verb Drills" are a perfect complement to my 'Auftakt 2" book (O.U. course). Not only do they provide essential revision, which I badly need, but they "hard-wire" essential structures into my brain.

Useful and well worth the purchase (with a few caveats)
I've now worked through several chapters of this book. It's a good help in understanding and beginning to master some grammatical features of German. You learn by studying and then doing. Answers are helpfully provided at the back.Just two complaints. For a number of the exercises only "sample answers" are provided, which means your answer may differ quite a lot from the one offered by the author. This is not ususally a problem as you still generally get a feel for whether the answer you gave is valid or not, but it does mean you're not getting a simple black and white answer. Related to this issue is the one of vocabulary and grammar. This book is not for beginners - despite what the title blurb says - as it demands a certain amount of German vocabulary knowledge to answer the questions, i.e. the vocabulary provided in the study sections is not adequate to cover what you need to know to write decent answers. This also applies to grammar to a lesser extent, as occasionally the book introduces grammatical features to the questions or answers of some sections that have not yet been examined in the book. So, this book is definitely not for beginners. I would say it is aimed at advanced beginners and those at the early intermediate level.Recommended.Update: the more I use this book the more I can see it's not for beginners, despite the blurb on the front cover. For example, some questions I just did on accusative-dative prepositions required you to also know something about the adjective endings, which I think is a design failing, as those have not been introduced in the book yet.

It's good, but you must be prepared to work through ...
It's good, but you must be prepared to work through the exercises thoroughly and methodically and then possibly repeat them if you are a novice like me. I thought it could have had a few more English translations for some of the German sentences given.

German Grammar Drills
Ho già apprezzato "German Sentence Builder" del medesimo autore e conosco la sua capacità di sintesi. In questo testo, sicuramente più ampio, ho notato un maggior sviluppo delle parti del discorso, in particolare, in "Number, Time, Days of the Week, and the Calendar" che fornisce espliciti riferimenti alla lingua di uso corrente, ci si può servire di un numero di esercizi congruo alla varietà delle situazioni. Altro esteso interessante capitolo è "Der" Words and "Ein" Words. In esso sono aggiunte informazioni ed elementi a perfezionamento dell'altro testo. In conclusione, il libro è utile ai fini di una più rapida lettura in lingua originale.

Great Supplemental Guide for My German Studies!
This is a great supplement to my Rosetta Stone sessions. With Rosetta Stone, I am learning how to speak, read and write German, but with this wonderful book I am learning WHY the grammar works the way it does. The format is easy to read and understand, and I think that the author does an excellent job of creating quick-but-fun exercises to help reinforce my grammar skills. There are plenty of examples in the front of each chapter, and I will often refer to a previous chapter if I need additional help on a question. As the title implies, this book is a great way to reinforce your grammar skills, however, it works best in conjunction with a German class or other form of instruction. It doesn't give definitions for all nouns and a dictionary or a little prior knowledge of the German language will help immensely. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for something to drill them on their beginner/intermediate German grammar.

It's practical
I wanted to get a german exercise book where I could practice writing sentences. There are many examples and exercises. Not all the vocabulary is translated but I also enjoy checking words in a dictionary.
