Singapore a hidden history
In Singapore, history officially begins in 1819 with the purchase of the island by Stamford Raffles. What I found extremely difficult to obtain is a complete history of Singapore with a comprehensive account of one of the World's phenomena in terms of one of the most prosperous and successful city state sin history. Most histories treat Singapore merely as an adjunct to histories of Malaya or South East Asia generally. The only alternative to find a history of Singapore is the autobiography of Lee Kuan Yew which naturally views Siongapore through the eyes of one very influential individual. This History is a comperhensive account of Singapore from the unbiased position of a leading expert of the region. While occasionally Turnbull chooses her words and interpretations carefully to avoid ocnflict with the regime this is a fascinating story to read and fully discusses all the leading characters and their actions in the formation of modern Singapopre. It is essential reading for anyone who goes to live and work in Singapore and gives the reader a deep understanding of the currents and tensions which exist in this dynamic and exciting community. As someone who has experienced the delights of living in this isalnd and city state it was a delight to have such a reference
