Q: Why is the sm belt totally different from the xl???

Apparently according to the description the small has less buoyancy. I don’t know why it’s shaped differently. I have the black one. I posted pictures in my review when I got it. It takes some getting used to because it rises up due to the buoyancy in the water and doesn’t stay around the waist well. At least that was my experience. Otherwise it’s fine once you use it a few times.

Q: Other than the price, what is difference in "extra comfort" vs regular?

More comfortable because it is not so high under arms the cover ripped where the belt attached after several months I did pull the strap very tight

These are like dumbbells you hold in hands while exercising in water.

Q: How deep does the pool need to be to keep your feet from hitting the bottom?

Depends how tall you are. I am 5'10" and my friend is 5' 1" and we both are using the same size belt. I like to use mine in the deep water. It keeps me floating up b tp the top of my shoulders.
