These latest releases in Warner Classics long-running ICON series highlight two conductors Georges Prêtre and Armin Jordan. They were born just eight years apart from each other - Prêtre in France in 1924 and Jordan in Switzerland 1932 - and both have a particular distinction in French music, but their careers followed very different paths.

Essential French repertoire
I have to admit to being rather snooty in the past about "bulk buying" of music in box sets, but some recent issues, such as this one from Erato under the late Armin Jordan, have been great. Okay, there will be some duplication of individual pieces of music and even particular recordings for many of us when buying boxes of reissues. That problem, however, is relatively minor when there is the opportunity to acquire a range of first rate recordings by great musicians whose understanding of particular areas of repertoire was profound. This box set of French and Belgian music of the late Nineteenth and Twentieth centuries recorded by Jordan is a case in point. Only one disc failed to impress - the one containing music by Chabrier - it lacks an essential element of brilliance - the reason may be a problem with the original recording, which seems rather distant. Other than that, however, the remaining twelve discs are very good indeed.
