The Joy of Watercolor Hardcover – January 1, 1983

I love this book. It is awesome as a watercolor course, and if you are interested in urban sketching, this book is very helpful in that regard. This book was printed before urban sketching became popular but it is a great addition to an urban sketcher's library. Regular practice from this book would help you to be able to do watercolor sketches quickly and with a certain liveliness. The sketches would also help you prepare for larger oil or acrylic paintings. Millard encourages students to buy a mid size aqua bee sketchbook to use as a practice pad. Those are great for practicing sketching with various media including watercolor. He also recommends a black carbon or color pencil as it shows up better than regular pencils.

I checked this book out of the library so many times, I finally had to buy it. It's a great book, and is a well-known classic in the watercolor world. It's full of really good teaching and, importantly, excellent art. The author's charismatic exuberance for art and classical music makes the text far more charming and inspiring than the average art book. I recommend highly, especially to those who enjoy art and music both!

I knew about this art book before I ordered it and I was pleased to see that it arrived in plenty of time and I am enjoying it very much. I paint myself and I enjoy the tips that are given.And it is pleasant to have such a book in my own library.

I would rate myself an advanced intermediate watercolor painter and I've learned from this book since it first came out. This is my third copy as I've given copies to others who were just beginning. This book is a primer, as well as advanced instruction, on composition, value, use of color and it's very inspiring. It lends itself to thinking about watercoloring sketching as well as fully executed paintings.

Outstanding, detailed book by an award-winning and dedicated artist and teacher. Sections on color especially useful. Probably the best book on watercolor I have found.

Didn’t cover what I thought it would

An excellent book that allows beginners to understand the process of painting in watercolor immediately. Actually great for all levels painters.I recommend this book to my friends as the first one to acquire.

Brilliant book, a must have to develop advanced watercolouring skills in conjunction with a sketchbook.

If you are serious about learning how to compose a good picture, learn about compostion, paint mixes, tones etc you will love this book. He shares all his secrets to help make an interesting watercolour painting. It is exactly what I was looking for, easy to follow and understand. I recommend without hesitation.

As with most books publish ed in the 80's and earlier. A lot of prose that you have to wade through to get to any kind of how to. No demos.
