Super convenient...cordless and heats up FAST
Years ago, my office partner had a butane curling iron and would do her hair at her desk. It was pretty amazing back then and after a long long time, I decided to get one to keep in MY desk. I love this thing! Heats up fast. Barrel is a good size. Controls are well designed. I can throw a few curls in my hair anytime I feel like it. And I really like the heat shield... You don't have to wait for the iron to cool before you put it away. Just take out the fuel cartridge and pop on the heat shield cover and back into the drawer it goes. And as others have said, it doesn't use much fuel. The level in my cartridge hasn't gone down at all after a dozen uses. As long as it lasts me a few years I'll be happy.

Great for living off-grid!
We were building a house and living off grid at the time. I used this to curl my hair and it worked great! It heats up fast and the cartridges last a long time (at least for me they did). I only wish they had it in a larger barrel size bu maybe they do and I just haven't found it yet. It would be great for traveling, camping, boating as well. It is a well made product and I love mine!

UGH, don't buy it! Defective and returns are complicated!
The main problem is that the wand doesn't grip my hair - my hair slides right out of it so there's no straightening or curling that can happen. Customer service is NOT easy - you have to go through Conair for anything instead of the usual easy Amazon process. And be aware - this is not just an easy travel iron. It uses BUTANE! Assembly and figuring out how to make it work was really difficult (bad instructions). Admittedly, it's on me that I didn't read the product info closely enough - I just wanted something cordless, I didn't realize the fuel was butane. What a pain. But I'd have stuck with it IF it curled my hair - it doesn't.

Works great, just not the quality of the 80’s version.
I used the original version of this curling iron for years, starting when I was a teen. I think I still have that one, somewhere, and it was still working great when I last used it. That means that it gave me DECADES of use. It was a bombproof little gem. This version works great and does what it is supposed to do, so no complaints that way. I wish it was made like the 1983 version, though. That version was made out of stronger materials and, when using, the cover came off and went over the thermacell to become the handle. It took up less space because of this. There also was no chance of losing the cover because of this. The old one was put through quite a lot because I traveled all summer, every summer with a drum corps and it was bumped around in my duffle a lot and used by not only myself, but many of the other girls every day. It held up through everything that I put it through. While I haven’t tried doing that with the new one, I really don’t think it would hold up as well. Time will tell. I’m glad they are still being made, because it is really a great convenience to be able to use it anywhere.

It works, but it’s cheaply made. Not gift worthy.
I have one of these I’ve had for years. It’s amazing. I’ve carried it around the world a dozen times and it’s great. You can use it anywhere, never worry about adapters…. The perfect gift for all my nieces for spring break and summer vacations. Unfortunately, the new ones are incredibly flimsy. Cheap plastic, mismatched, handle and lid… I mean, it works ok, but I could never give it as a gift. Disappointing.

Lightweight and needs no electricity
Will be using this for a 8 day safari where there is no electricity. no need for a voltage converter and lugging additional weight. TSA approves this as a carry on with the fuel cell disconnected. Old research tells you to check it in with luggage. the latest TSA wants it on your carry on. Suggest you check butane curling iron on the TSA site and print it out for reference prior to boarding a plane. I tested my unit and it heated up perfectly. the 3/4 inch barrel is more like a half inch barrel, they don't make any other size. I noticed other folks complaining about their units not heating up, but my curling iron heated up fine and it took about 1.5 minutes to do so. This is not immediate like a plug in the wall unit. The unit looks fragile, but as a carry on, it should be just fine.Additional comments. I used this on a 11 day safari and thought it failed to operate. The experience of the barrel failing to heat was strange, so I solved it by 1. keeping the curling iron vertical standing up versus horizontal (don't know why, but it worked), I also shook the butane tube up a bit and then it started working fine. The barrel did not get hot enough until I did the above. Prior to that, it was just warm and easy to touch, even though it was lit. I think it has to do more with the butane source than the actual unit. Also I placed the butane cartridge with my shampoo and and makeup bag and ran it through TSA in the US, Paris, Johannesburg, Zimbabwe. But I also didn't volunteer I had this cartridge as flammable liquids are not approved per the boarding signs. Yet, if you check TSA for the US, this cartridge can be carried as a carry on with the cartridge separated from the curling iron. Go figure this riddle out!Would I purchase again, you bet! It works, but try it at home and figure out the quirks first.

Pleasantly surprised
At first, I was reluctant to use it but it certainly worked perfectly. I didn't have to worry about a converter or anything. I wouldn't hesitate about using it anywhere again. I probably would have liked a bigger barrel, like 1"or bigger but it certainly did the job.

This curling iron heats well and does a good job. It is cheaply made as the flipper on top tends to bend out of shape when one tries to clean thehairspray off of it.

It's benefits are that it is portable and heats up quickly. I don't think that I would purchase it again, however, as it is very harsh on the hair and has resulted in visible damage to my ends after 5-6 uses. The barrel is also too small to do loose waves and really is only suitable for tight curls.
