Before the Ashanti region was annexed by the British in 1901, into what is now Ghana, it was one of the most powerful kingdoms of pre-colonial Africa, and music played a vital role in Ashanti society. The tracks on this 1979 Folkways release range from genres found at the court of chiefs to highlife. Multi-level drum music predominates, but there are also other instruments and vocal numbers, especially by women.

Not good
I was searching for some African music and I thought I would find it in this and I was dead wrong. Send it back to Africa.

Great authentic traditional Asante music in the Twi language
This is amazing, authentic traditional Asante music. Spiritual. I am Ghanaian-American and was searching for the music I heard as a child. Please note songs are in Twi. And please don’t rate this badly just because you don’t understand the language or care for traditional drumming.
