Belle Epoque [DVD]

*Spoiler alert*Quite an entertaining movie about a young army deserter that finds himself the subject of interest when he stays at an artist’s house, and his four daughters visit. The acting is good and it is not a bad Spanish comedy. You do not see that much of Penelope Cruz, but the three older sisters are very good, each with their own unique story, finding themselves drawn in turn, to the quite bland Fernando. A little in the same vein as Sirens but that was much better.What spoilt it for me is the downbeat ending, when the priest hangs himself for no apparent reason, which was quite unnecessary and jarred slightly with the comedy tone of most of the movie. At the start there is another killing and suicide when the two soldiers argue about releasing the young man. If the director had changed these two sequences the whole movie would have been lifted.3 stars 10/12/16

This beautiful movie was sent from Spain. A great pity that there is no facility to get subtitles of the Spanish conversation. The enjoyment of the movie has been much curtailed by this lack. Luckily I have some basic knowledge of Spanish as well as an old Video-recording (with subtitles in English), but I wonder if I can still exchange this movie for one with English subtitles?

A charming film with some excellent performances and extremely funny in places. Slightly surreal in some scenes, but it all flows nicely and made me laugh out loud occasionally, which is not an easy thing to precipitate in my case when it comes to comedy films, as I tend to be rather choosy with that genre. Having said that, I did not even realize it was a comedy as I only really bought it to improve my Spanish, and out of the 3 Spanish well-rated films I have bought so far, this is the one that I have enjoyed the most.

One of the best films ever. My Spanish is not that good but after a short while you forget that its subtitled and enjoy the 'fluff'. Whoever wrote that has no soul...to say its only aimed at Penelope Cruz fans is rubbish and insulting to the wealth of other talented actors in it. Highly enjoyed by all the guests I have shown it to. Dont be put off buying by people who have no sense of humour....or a limited one at least...... simply SUPERB!!!

Funny, sexy and heart-warming celebration of love and desire. Outstanding performance by Jorge Sanz and Penelope Cruz is as lovely as ever. We love this film, just watched it a second time.

A bit dated but great fun

Excellent film with a balance of comedy and pathos that reflects to some degree the lives of ordinary folk during the Spanish civil war
