A great read
Having watched the anime adaptation I already had a good understanding of the story line, but I have very much enjoyed reading the series and can't wait for when the next volume is translated! The books give a better understanding of the background of Tanya's actions and those of her superiors which I really enjoyed. I also love the reference to historical figures and battles as a but of a history nerd. The translations are alsp much better and make much more sense than some other light novel series that I've read. I feel this may be in part down to the European esque setting which rids the story of often mistranslated japanes cultural references.

Fantastic read!
The concept is really interesting and incredible. I also really like it is read from the perspective of different characters. Would recommend to anyone over 13 or history lovers.

Good continuation
I felt that this one was a little short in comparison to the first one but still enjoyed nonetheless, my only gripes are that a couple images are missing from this release and that wait is so long for the final part.

The Author is his own worst enemy
He did it againThese would be amazing books, they really would, but I sometimes wonder if Carlo Zen is deliberately making these books as hard to read as possible and intentionally ruining the natural flow.Events cut back and forth from place to place from different points in time that you have to pay attention to the dates of the subchapters, this can make for a confused mess of events if you are not paying attention, because it does mean that characters it moves characters from one setting to another, when you don't know why or how they got there until you find out that it's a totally different time period and we're now dealing with past events. Not to mention that there is then a different narrative of future events overlaid, so it does keep jumping back and forth from place to place and through all different time settings. For me the worst sin is that we have different interwoven stories going on, and the one that is set outside of the timeline of the events Tanya in seems unnecessary and just serves to break up the flow of events.

Someone get Carlo Zen an editor who knows how story structure is supposed to work
The concept is brilliant and there are nuggets of good writing. The author just doesn't seem to know how to put it all together in a narrative that flows.

Love this series; can't wait to read more.
This is an amazing franchise, and the source material does not disappoint!10/10, highly recommend..The Anime TV series was great, but does regrettably gloss over many of the details of the books; I love the levels of detail they go into in terms of Military Strategy, Economic Policy, as well as the projected dichotomy of Jingoistic faithful religious devotee, and Libertarian anti-theist philosoph espoused by our lead character depending on the context. He/She is very emphatically a complex can of worms in herself, and I wish there were more warped, twisted, and flawed protagonists like her. I still want to see her unironically win her challenge against god/"Being X", take over Europe for Germany, and build the Greater Kaiserreich just to spite him, even though I know full well that the author has maintained from his afterword of volume 1 onward, that such is probably never going to happen, or is at least, very unlikely. This, despite all the exceedingly entertaining fan-fiction series actively being written to the contrary by various authors as we speak, which could be made into multiple high quality spin-off series in their own rights at this point, were they to become cannon. The fanart too for this series, is top notch and plentiful, despite it's relative newness; to say nothing of all the endless memes.....While I won't go into the details of the plot for this volume here, so as to avoid spoilers, I will say that for viewers of the Anime series, Volumes 1 & 2 retread old ground, but go into considerably more depth, and are thus worth purchasing just the same. If you haven't seen the show, by all means buy the books, and then go watch it as a supplement, or vice versa; both are good, and will keep you entertained until the Movie comes out in theatres and for streaming/alternate (physical storage) means of home release later this year (2018), or until the eventual (almost inevitable given the show's popularity) announcement of season 2.One thing I will say, is I like the art style of these novels more than that of the show or manga, but I understand the changes, as such would have been exceedingly difficult to draw en-mass, much less animate at a reasonable cost..In conclusion, buy the books, buy season 1, watch the movie in theatres this year, and buy season 2 when it comes out."Deus Lo Vult" Comrades. Deus Lo Vult. ;)

Different from the Anime and Manga, but that's good
If you’re a fan of The Saga of Tanya the Evil and you’re reading this review then you’re probably already read volume one. The biggest differences between the light novel and the anime and manga were the focuses on magic and fighting. While the light novel had much less fighting and magic than the manga and anime, it made up for it with much more introspection. Much of the plot for the first book was the same as the other media as well. So perhaps you liked it enough to read that or perhaps you are looking at reviews for the first two or so light novels, but do not know what to expect. This review will talk about the differences while trying to avoid spoilers. As noted above, the light novel includes less action than the anime and manga, but that is actually an understatement. The Anime and Manga could easily be called action series, with the fighting scenes taking up a near bulk of the time, but the book almost glosses over it entirely. Book one saw a reduction with must scenes summarized, but book two takes that to a whole new level. This time the action scenes are never fully fleshed out and are almost exclusively debriefed after the fact. Some of the major scenes from the anime, such as the bomber scenes are different or cut. The being X doesn’t make any more appearances, with the super natural storylines having been diminished to near non-existence. One of the most important action sequences is relegated to a short scene. Really the book features some five or so battles while only actually bringing you through maybe two and a half. The rest of the book is all introspection, politics, logistics and in between. The tone could not have been any more different if it were an entirely different story. Additionally the plot starts to deviate in major ways in the light novel vol two verses the anime and manga sections it follows. Whereas book one was a relatively faithful telling from a new angle, this one feels more distinctly different.None of this is to say that the book is worse. Rather, this is far and away my preferred way of getting my Tanya the Evil fix. For one, Tanya continues to be more down to earth and realistic in this version than the others. While the manga and anime show her being evil, without the look inside her head you have a hard time seeing the character as anything but shallow. The light novel Tanya isn’t only deep and complex, she is very real and even relatable. Furthermore this book starts to descend into a war madness that the previous book lacked, with a hefty dose of critique of warmongers. The author does an excellent job of unreliable narration and I could not stress enough how much fun this is to read. Given the length you might find it dry or hard to follow, but the book repeats ideas a lot (sometimes on the same page) in order to make sure the points hit home. The experience is different than the other medium’s but is, in my view, way better. At the end of the day I really struggle to find anything to criticize about this book. The amount you like it or not will depend mostly on your taste, but for what it set out to do it may have done so with utter perfection. I do hate to over hype something or call it a masterpiece, but this one really seems to achieve its goals flawlessly. Tanya is a perfectionist, maybe there is a little bit of Tanya in the author. Then again, maybe we shouldn’t go down that road. Read this book!
