In Los Angeles, a city where streets are overrun by drug dealers, those who have sworn to uphold the law are breaking them to clean up the streets. Denzel Washington plays L.A.P.D. detective Alonzo Harris, a veteran narcotics officer whose methods of enforcing the law are questionable, if not corrupt. 'Training Day' follows Harris as he trains rookie Jake Hoyt over a 24-hour period. Ethical dilemmas arise for Hoyt as well as the audience as questions present themselves as to whether or not Harris' methodology for ridding the streets of South Central Los Angeles of drugs is right or wrong.

Many great actors have done this over the years
This was a great opportunity for Denzel Washington. He has nearly always played the good guy and his career has been quite amazing, an actor capable of anything and playing the villian for one movie is a terrific challenge and one that he pulls of brilliantly and is very powerful. Many great actors have done it, most notably perhaps is Steve McQueen, who played a villian, a real bad guy just once in The Getaway. This piece is just as strong and is a fine example of Denzel's abilities as an actor. Playing a twisted but charismatic undercover narcotics detective, Denzel carries this part with ease, giving his new recruit partner a real hard time, but hooking him in simultaneously. He is quite unnerving in some scenes, but his drive is matched only by his own twisted self-belief and justification by what he is doing.Powerful and brilliant.

Training Day film starring Denzel Washington.
I'd seen this before, wondered if I'd still enjoy it, as quite old now, but was delighted to find I liked it just as much as the first time.Denzel is my favourite on the big screen, such a brilliant actor - everything he does is so believable!Undeniably rather a dark story due to the subject and characters involved, but well worth watching in my opinion, with a very dramatic and unforgettable ending!

Quite simply one of the most entertaining cop movies ever ...
Quite simply one of the most entertaining cop movies ever made, especially in the rookie/mentor sub-genre. The movie is fast-paced and action-packed all the way through and never tries to be too clever or get bogged down in the ethical dilemmas facing cops dealing with the seedy world of drugs. Denzel Washington is superb throughout and deserves every accolade for his performance as a crooked Narco who has "got in too deep" and hatches a desperate plan to save his own skin - whatever the cost. Highly Recommended. "You're in the office, baby."If you feel that this review has helped in your decision to buy/or not buy this item, please press the Helpful button. Best wishes!

Five Stars
Fantastic. A great portrayal of corruption in the police narcotic department. Training day was and still is a pioneering film that will have you completely immersed from start to finish. Denzel Washington is absolutely superb and utterly convincing as a narcissistic narcotic detective. Loads of cool one liners, a superb script. This film is one of the best films I've ever watched. This film is a classic. The best film I've ever seen Denzel Wahington in and you can see why Mr Washington won an Oscar.

Gritty and hard hitting drama
Really very good film, this one. Oh yes.Right from the word go, it grabs you. Ethan Hawke plays a convincing role as a uniformed cop in the LAPD and his initiation in to the highly dubious role of a "narc". His tutor, played brilliantly by Denzel Washington, is as bent as they come and the drama plays out well as Hawke's character tries to stay above the depraved activities of Washington's character.....a hard line bully, corrupted, and prepared to go to any lengths to get what he wants.A truly memorable film, I can personally recommend it.

WASHINGTON FIRST CLASS
This 118 min REGION B/2 DVD was first class from start to finish. Washington was brilliant in his role as a rogue cop. I would recommend this DVD but add that it did include bad language that some people may not like.

Incredible
A police drama about a veteran officer (Washington) who escorts a rookie (Hawke) on his first day with the LAPD's tough inner-city narcotics unit. While the movie stays tightly focused on the struggle between the two cops, the movie is first rate. Even after it becomes clearer which side of law Harris is operating on, the film continues to work as a taut, violent police thriller.
